FAMOUS BRITISH PICTURE
RICHARD DIX STARRED 111 ■ THE TUNNEL 1 One of the most amazing themes ever brought to the sound screen is embodied in ‘ The Tunnel,’ the GaumontBritish production which commences a season at the Gram! to-morrow. Soma of the biggest stars in Hollywood were taken to England for this film, which sets a new standard in the class lormerly headed by ‘Metropolis’ and ‘High Treason.’ Seldom before has spectacle been so successfully combined with a dramatic story. It was something of a screen adventure to attempt to depict the construction of a huge tunnel under the Atlantic, but the craftsmen and technicians have triumphed over all difficulties. The plot moves swiftly to dramatic heights. The work is begun; unheard-of difficulties are encountered —and mastered by the engineering magic of a new era. The cast includes Richard Dix, Madge Evans, Helen Vinson, Leslie Banks, C. Aubrey Smith, and Basil Sydney. George Arliss and Walter Huston _ appear _in brief interludes as the British Prime Minister and the President _ of the United States respectively. It is worthy of note that this film has increased the prestige of British production. ‘The Tunnel ’ is a picture possessing all the qualities that make for successful film entertainment. The story is human and dramatic; the theme visionary in the immensity of the task—no less than driving a tunnel from England to America; the settings magnificent in their scope; the production spectacular and amazing; the acting flawless in every respect.
