SWEEP CLAIMANT IN COURT
RENAMED ON VAGRANCY CHARGE ONE PENNY IN HIS POSSESSION Ernest Arthur Tremere Johnstone, the young man whose name resounded through New Zealand recently as having won £30,000 in the Irish Sweep—a claim denied some days later—ajpipeared in the Police Court this morning charged with being idle and disorderly in that he had insufficient lawful means of support. His age was given at 22 years. Senior-sergeant Packer: I ask for a remand for one week as we have to make inquiries into matters of breaking and entering and other offences. Your Worship will remember that this is the young man who was supposed to have won £30,000 in the Irish Sweep. He has been at a loose end since then and had only one penny in his possession when he was arrested. Johnstone has been in Timaru recently, and there are certain inquiries to be made there. I am not altogether sure that he is mentally sound. The Magistrate (Mr Bartholomew) remanded the accused until to-morrow week. Johnstone, who appeared to be amused at the proceedings, made no comment.
