OTAGO CHESS CLUB
The monthly meeting of the Otago Chess Club was held in the club’s playing rooms, on Saturday evening. Hie president; Mr W. Lang, presided, and the following members of the committee were present:—Messrs J. S. M. Lawson, G. D. Wright, R. Williamson, I). Langley, G. Begg, D. H. Hastings, and W. Herbert (hon. secretary). The New Zealand Chess Association forwarded copies of the amended rules to cover future Dominion chess congresses. —The club’s Match Committee to report. It was reported that Mr E. H. Bennett on duly 22 had given a blindfold exhibition of a knight’s tour on six boards, each knight commencing from a different point. It was decided to congratulate Mr Bennett on his very fine performance and to write to the New Zealand Chess Association requesting it to ascertain if Mr Bennett’s exhibition was, as claimed, a world s record. Deports were given on the progress of the club’s learner’s classes, and the weekly district tournaments. It was reported that Mr John Amadio, the well-known-flautist, who was visiting Dunedin, was an expert chess player. Arrangements were made to invite Mr Amadio to the club’s rooms. The secretary was instructed to extend an invitation to the Oamaru Club to send a team to Dunedin to play a match with a team of the Otago Chess Chib. , A motion of condolence was passed with the relatives of the late Mr Spencer Crackenthorp, of Sydney, an Australian plaver of repute. Mr Crackanthorp visited Dunedin in 1925-26 during the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, when the New Zealand Chess Congress was held here. He won the New Zealand championship on that occasion, against very strong oppoition.
