TAIERI POULTRY SOCIETY

SUCCESSFUL SHOW The committee of the Taicri Poultry Society has every reason to be satisfied with the forty-eighth annual show. Fine weather was experienced and the public, patronised the show very well, especially in the evening. Though in some instances it was not up to last year’s standard, yet it was an excellent exhibition on the who.e. West Taieri supported the show well this year. Mr Gobbe (the principal judge) had a long task, it being well into the afternoon before he had the award list ready. He spoke most favourably of the open class Orpingtons, the Game, and the Silkies. In the utility, the Brown Leghorns, Black Orpingtons, Minorcns, and the Australorps were most admired. The judges of both the cage birds and the pigeons were well satisfied with the exhibits, and the specially large entries of budgerigars and love birds were a feature. . The judge of the potato section said it should be a very strong feature of this show considering that potato cropping was ono of the principal industries of the district. Though the entries were not numerous, some good tubers were shown and the sample gaining the first prize ticket in the table class was outstanding. Tho swede turnips were of good quality. The entries in the honey classes were mostly of excellent quality, especially in the liquid class; in the granulated class good honey lost points through coarseness of grain and froth. Competitors should read the conditions more carefully, two entries being disqualified for showing one jar in each class where two were required. The section honey was very clean; but it might have been a little better filled. The garden produce was quite good, but the judge said that in a district such as Mosgiel, with so many excellent gardens, a much larger entry should have been made. He appealed to the residents to support the society and make this section popular. • Mr E. J. Wilson (president), Mr J.W. Craigie (secretary), and an energetic committee controlled the show in a satisfactory manner. The following is a list of the awards:— . POULTRY (Open Class). Judge: Mr J. G. Gobbe (Christchurch).
