“ SANDY ” KERR DEAD Air Alexander Kerr, better known 40 years ago as Sandy Kerr, a Canterbury Rugby representative and All Black, died in the Public Hospital. Christchurch, on Thursday. . Mr Kerr wa« 65 years of age, and was a coal merchant in business at Woolston. Beginning his football career with the Kaikorai Club, Dunedin, Mr Kerr later joined the Linwood Club, of whicK he was a member during the year# when the Linwood senior teams dominated Canterbury football. * He represented Canterbury 11 times in 1895 and 1896, and played for New Zealand against Queensland in 1896. He i» still remembered as one of the best forwards ever to have represented Canterbury. He was a powerful forward, more than six feet in height, and weighing between 14 and 15 stone. ; A warm tribute to Mr Kerr’a qualities as a footballer and a man was paid by Mr C. W. Hervey, who was a club-mate of his 40 years ago. During the years of Linwood’s ascendancy there was a tendency to neglect the junior teams, Mr Hervey said. Mr Kerr took the lead in reversing this state of affairs. Pie sneiit n great deal of time iu coaching and encouraging the 1 younger players. He was also honoured as a clean and sporting player of tho game. .
