THE POLICE BALL

The special committee which organised and controlled the first annual police ball has good cause to bo gratified at the success of its efforts, the function held in the Concert Chamber on Monday night proving one of the most successful of the season. Nothing was left undone by members of the Dunedin Police Force to make their first venture of this kind one long to lie remembered, and the decorative scheme of blue and gold—the colours of the Dunedin force—completely transformed the appearance of the Concert Chamber, which was thronged with more than 250 couples. Streamers in blue and gold were hung around the walls and along the gallery, surrounding the lamps in a fluted cylinder and forming a star across the ceiling. The whole scheme was enhanced in attractiveness by the pretty spotlight effects, and the stage was most artistically adorned with greenery. Easy chairs were arranged below the stage and made a charming lounge. Slipper was served in the supper room, which was most artistically arranged with special floral decorations and with multi-coloured balloons. Mr J. Kilmartin was the highly efficient M.C., and the committee which worked so hard to make a success of the function, was under the chairmanship of .Superintendent Cameron, with Mr R. O’Shanghnessy as secretary, in the absence of Mr G. P. Ogilvie through illness.

Tho guests were received by Seniorsergeant and Mrs W. E. Pucker, and the latter, who wore a gown of floral taffeta, was presented with a bouquet by Miss M. Boulton, on behalf of the committee. Others in the official party were Superintendent Cameron; Inspector O’Halloran with Mrs Q’Halloran, wearing black lace, with a shoulder spray; Sergeant Boulton with Mrs Boulton, in Lido embossed velvet and gold lame; Sergeant Forsythe, Constable O’Shangnessy, and Miss M, Hastie, tho latter in rose pink taffeta and gold trimming; Constable and Mrs Hansen, the latter in brown satin and lace; Constable and Mrs Brooks; Constable and Mrs Buchanan (Balclntha), in flame satin; Constable M'Dougall, De-tive-sergeant Hall, and Misses A. G. and E. Hall; and Detective Lo Sueur. Among those present wore Mr and Mrs J. P. Ward; Mr and Mrs E. J. Anderson; Mr and Mrs 0. B. Barrowelongh; Mr and Mrs L. R. Simpson; Messrs J. J. Warrington, W.
