TIMARU MAYORALTY
MR VINNELL INSTALLED WITHDRAWAL OF CANDIDATE CLOUDS LEGAL POSITION [Per United Press Association.] TIMARU, June 15. Mr P. C. Vinnell was to-night installed as Mayor of Timaru. Following the death of the previous mayor (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite), the town clerk, as returning officer, called for nominations, two being received. One candidate subsequently withdrew and a doubt existed regarding the legal position as the notice of withdrawal was not given seven clear days before the election. The returning officer consulted the borough solicitors and later declared Mr Vinnell elected mayor unopposed. A special meeting of the council was held to-night for the purpose of the investiture of the mayor. Before signing the declaration Mr Vinnell stated that as a result of the opinion expressed by the borough solicitors he proposed making the usual declaration, but he would ask the council to obtain further legal advice. Should this not confirm that given by the borough solicitors he would regard it as his duty immediately to tender his resignation.
