MANCHESTER UNITY

The fortnightly meeting of Loyal Centenary Lodge was held in the AVesley Hall, Wesley street, N.G. Bro. A. Norman in the chair. The secretary explained the conditions governing the efficiency shield competition, these having been modified as the result of recommendations made by the lodge to the Competitions Committee. The lodge was prominent in this competition some years ago, and the opinion of the meeting was that Centenary should, enter this year. Nominations for office were held over until next lodge night. The meeting then adjourned, and the third and final round of the annual card tournament was played, Bro. 11. A. Scott proving the winner by a narrow margin.

The fortnightly meeting of Loyal United Juvenile Lodge, held in AVilson’s Hall, was presided over by N.G. Bro. M.'Donald. Visiting brethren welcomed were adult members of Loyal \ r alley and members of Loyal Caversham Juvenile Lodge. The Programme for the evening was in the hands of the A'aUey Lodge, and a number of competitions were staged. AA'inners were as follow:—Quoits —Bro. Griffin ]. Bro. Knowles 2; balloon race, Bros. Purdie and Itondall; weight guessing, Bros. Stewart and Gibson. Responses to the visitors’ toast wore made by the N.G.s of the Loyal A’alley, Princess Alary, and Caversham Juvenile Lodges, and before closing a vote of thanks was accorded tho A r alley Lodge for its hospitality. The Past Grands’ Lodge met in the District Chambers, Stuart street, P.G. Bro. M. Isaac presiding. Matters of interest to the lodge were discussed, including the question of degree meetings. It was felt that tho Past Grands’ Lodge had some responsibility in this connection, especially in view of the advent of the universal ritual, and it was' suggested that a team of officers should be appointed to deliver the degrees. Finally the secretary (Bro. Cameron) andP.G.s Lawry and Swan were requested to go into the question of degrees and report to a later meeting. It was decided to hold a social function .on July 7, when the elective officers and immediate past grands of tho various lodges would be entertained. Arrangements for a programme were left in the hands of Bro. Swan. An interesting paper was read by P.P.G.M. Bro. P,. S. Jack, who dealt with the various forms of symbols and crosses and their development from early times. Bro. Jack was accorded a vote of thanks.

Tho fortnightly meeting of Loyal Princess Mary Lodge was held in the Cavcrsham Lodge Hall, Forbury _Corner, N.G. Sister E. Edwards presiding o/er a good attendance of members and visiting brethren. Two candidates were initiated. Nominations'for office were taken, the installation of officers to be held next lodge night. Tho resignation of Sister Wright from the office of treasurer was accepted with regret, and nominations to fill the vacancy were opened and adjourned. On the completion of business the lodge adjourned to entertain sisters and visiting brethren at a social evening, items being rendered by Sisters Lnuam and Macdonald (songs), Miss E. Lunam (recitations), and Master Nicholls (tap dances). Dancing concluded an enjoyable evening. Tho half-yearly meeting of Loyal Tnapeka Pioneer Lodge was held at Lawrcne. P.G. Bro. L. Gare welcoming a large attendance of members. Special reference was made to the presence of two members, Bro. M‘ 1v 1 r,lay. on a visit from Beef ton, and P.G. Bro. M‘Douald, a veteran member of the former Blue Spur Lodge. One candidate was initiated. Nominations for office were closed, the installation to be held next lodge night. Before the meeting closed opportunity was taken to extend best wishes to P.P.G.M. Bro. A. L. Hart, who is shortly leaving on a holiday trip. Bros. M'Kinlay and M'Donald returned thanks for the cordial welcome extended to them.

The N.G.. I3ro. X. Hay, presided over a good attendance of members at the fortnightly meeting of Loyal Albion Lodge. Before commencing business reference was made to the passing of an old and esteemed member, P.G. Bro. A. M'Dowall, and members passed a resolution of sympathy by standing in silence for a few moments. Two propositions for membership were received, and nominations for office taken. An invitation was extended to the district officers to conduct the half-yearly installation. of officers next lodge night. The X.G., on behalf of members, conveyed hearty congratulations to P.G. Bro. .lohn Carrington, the oldest member of the lodge, who that day celebrated his eighty-first birthday. Bro. Carrington, who has been a member for over 63 years, and is a regular atteuder at meetings, was warmly greeted on rising to respond. The lodge later adjourned, and a ladles’ evening was held, taking the form of a progressive euchre tournament. The popularity of these evenings was evident by the very large attendance. After an enjoyable series of games the N.G. presented prises to Mrs Cook 1.. Mrs Bryan 2, Bro. T. Penny annexing the men’s trophy.
