MOTOR CYCLING
FIXTURES June 16.—Annual meeting. June 23.—King’s Birthday trial. CLUB NOTES The cycle section of the A.A.O. was again favoured with fine weather on the afternoon of June C, when it held a petrol consumption test. A good muster of 30 motor cyclists assembled at the club rooms, where fuel tanks were disconnected and small tins attached to the carburetters with flexible tubing. With a carefully measured pint of petrol in each of these miniature tanks, contestants were started and required to ride until this small supply was exhausted. The Portobello road was followed. Other motorists using this road must hate wondered to see all the motor cyclists stopped at intervals by the roadside waiting for their mileage
to bo checked. Those who wore still miming at Portohello were turned back over the same route to Macandrcw’s Bay, where they again about-turned. The decision was very close, it being rather amusing when the winner's machine cut out almost beside that of W. Torrance, the second man. He struggled past, only half a dozen yards finally separating the two. Considering that most of the cycles were of the fast sporting type, the mileages covered were remarkably good, and say a lot for the economy of the modern motor cycle. Before returning to Dunedin, those present were the guests of Mr J. Passmore at an excellent and much-appreciated afternoon tea at Macandrew s Bay. The results were as follows, the figures being in miles per gallon;—W. B. Pottet (Norton), 162.4; W. Torrance (Matchless (162.4) ; Miss R. Chennells (Triumph), 144; 11. H. Stewart (Rudge), 142.4; J. 0. Mewhinney (Francis-Baniett), 139.2; J. Swan (Aerial), 137.6; W. Tonkinson (Q.K. Supreme), 131.2; B. Burns (Aerial), 128.8; J. Chalmers (0.K.), 125.6; E. Nowall (Zenith), 125. G; J. Robertson (Francis-Barnett), 119.2; F. Harman (Harley), 111.2; S. Jones (Aerial), 109.6; C. Russell (Ariel), 107.2; M. Spence (Now Imperial), 98.4; J. Lanceley (Rndge), 93.6; A. Schofield (Aeriel), 88.8; J. M'Millan (Excelsior), 84.8; R. Coombs (0.K.), 72.8; C. H. Bingham (Rudge), 72. Those intending competitors who have not yet entered for the King’s Birthday reliability trial should do so immediately, as entries close with the secretary of the A,A.O. to-morrow, at 5.30 p.m. The trial is for motor cycles and cars. Members and friends are reminded of the cvcle section’s annual meeting to bo held to-morrow evening in the association’s rooms, Moray Place. Business will include election of officers for the forthcoming season, following which will be the presentation of trophies won by members throughout the past season. Following the business of the meeting, those present will he the guests of the executive of the A.A.O. at a dance and supper. This will, as it has proved in the past, be a really enjoyable evening, and those interested should not fail to attend.
