NEW TYRE THEORY
ACTION OF GROOVED TREADS If the latest developments in tyres are suggestive of what may be possible in other things relating to the car, the motorist can expect to see some startling reversals of commonly accepted theories. For years the chief aim of tyre builders has ben to design treads that would be rough and gripping. They were limited because of the desire to avoid tread noise and power loss, but the safest treads were considered to be those which bad a maximum of cross cuts. Now the situation lias been turned completely around. The latest development is a type of tread that has alternate fins and grooves running parallel with the circumference of the tyre. Such treads can be purchased already part of the tyres, or they can be vulcanised to any good tyre that has a worn tread. The plan has made -great headway in Britain, and is rapidly catching on in America too. Tests made on such treads show that the fins tend to take on a variety of designs when the car is starting or stopping. Thus, the tread grips more in proportion to the need for traction. When rolling it offers a minimum resistance and, of course, wears less.
