HARRIERS

CIVIL SERVICE. At St. Kilda the Civil Service held its three-mile race for the Railway Cup and a half-mile race for the juniors under 17. In the senior race, in which there were 45 starters, the limit men were despatched 2min 30sec before the scratch men, Geddes and AFLachlan. The course for the race began at the St. Kilda tram terminus, the runners commencing the course along Victoria road in the direction of St. Clair for about a quarter of a mile, thence through a track leading to Lovers’ Lane. The lane was then followed to the cemetery gates at Anderson’s Bay, where the runners turned down Lawyers Hoad road and finished at the point where the road began. From the outset the limit men clapped on the pace, and after the first I,oooyds had been covered Henderson, Brainier, Harris, and Wheeler were in the lead, with AFKersev, Hollands, and AFKell ar moving up, while the scratch men were running together. Going through the sandhills the leaders fell back, and at the cemetery gates M‘Kersey was in the lead, followed by Hollands 30yds back. Once on the road Hollands found the .going better, and with half a mile to go took the lead. Over the last mile Geddes and Broad (oOsec) moved up very fast, hut were unable to patch the leaders. The final placing* were:—J. Hollands 1, G. M’Kersey 2, M. AFKinnon 3. Time, IGniin 23 l-ssee. Fastest time was gained by A. R. Geddes, who was tenth and his time was ISmin 30sec. J. G. Ba rues _was suffering from a slight cold and did not compete in the race. The half-mile *raco for the juniors was held prior to the senior event, and was contested by a file of 11 runners. The handicaps were based on ages, as this was the first race these boys have competed in. In a fast-run race along Victoria road for- a quarter of a mile and back, the pace was on from the start, and the limit man (Q. Walker), off 40yds, gave the hack-markers something to do. Walker was first to commence the homeward run, but M, Collins, off 20yds, was showing good judgment and was content to remain bandy until 200yds from the tape, when he took the lead to win by syds from C. Walker, who just headed W. Lucas, .1. Thomson, and L. Belcher. The scratch man, C. Campbell, was sixth. The tune for the race was 2min 21see. : The following have been selected to represent the club in the Kennct Cup race at Christchurch next Saturday;— Messrs J. G . Barnes, A. R. Geddes, C. A. Broad. J. Hollands. J. S. Asher, and M. AFKinnon. Air Geddes has been appointed captain and Mr AFKernan will accompny the team as manager. The team will leave on Friday next. DUNEDIN. The club held its run from the residence of Airs Kennedy, Marne street, Anderson’s Bay. A fair attendance turned out under the whistles of Captain .1, Lorimer and Deputy-captain Y. Sturgeon. The trail led along Alarne street until Vauxhall road was reached, proceeding up this road past the Anglican Boys’ Homo. After following the road for some distance, the pack then proceeded acoss paddocks until Highcliff road was reached. From here the trail Jed up to the Soldiers’ Memorial, where the olnh exchanged greetings with the Leith Club. Leaving the memorial, the trail led across country until the Tomahawk Lagoon was reached. From here the pack proceeded along the road and up past the cemetery. After proceeding along the road it split up, and the following runners led the fast pack borne: —F. Mowat 1, J. Lorimer 2. The following runners Jed the slow pack' home:—Alarshall 1, Bell 2, K. Hastie 3, AFDonnell 4. After the run the members ( were entertained to tea by Airs Kennedy. CAVERSHAM, Caversham ran from Green Island School with a smaller atetnclauce than usual, only 33 turning out. There were three packs, in charge of the captain and the two deputy-captains. Leaving from the school, the packs ran to the township, crossing the Main road, and round to Abbotsford. Passing the tileries, the packs turned to the right into the paddocks, running along beside the railway line for some distance till the Chain Hills were reached. The route then made across the hills till the water race was reached at Mr Friend’s homestead. From here the race was followed to the reservoir, where the fast pack, which had a very solid run, did two laps of the reservoir and then down the paddocks to Green Island and back to tbe school. All packs had a fairly solid day’s run, which was one of the best this season. The fast and slow packs only had a run homo, which resulted;—Fast pack: Colston 1. Austin 2, Knox 3; slow pack; G. Watson 1, F. Brown 2, J. Petherick 3. ST. PATRICK’S. St, Patrick’s ran from Nga Alaara Hall, North-east Valley. The fast pack, under Deputy-captain Woods, held a fast training run up the high road to Brown House, thence over the paddocks to Bethnnc’s Gully and down the low road home. A good pace, was maintained, and all members were kept well bundled throughout the run. The slow pack, under Captain W. C. AFDonnell, covered the same ground as far as Brown House, and then continued up the Main road foiv, about three miles. 'Turning off the Alain road across country, the pack continued down into Bethune’s Gully on to the low road, whore a good medium pace was set for homo. Those prominent were Ryan, Gray, AFDonnell, and De Conrcey. HANOVER BAPTIST. The above club held its run from the Coronation Hall, Alaori Hill, in perfect running conditions. The trail led along Bulmaeowen road, past the golf links, towards Wakari, and then over to the Helensburgh road, thence over some paddocks, and branching off down to the Leith Valley road. Continuing along to the bridge past the school, the pack went up the hillside as far as Nichols’ Falls, and. following a track well up the hillside, came out on, the slopes of Flagstaff. Eventually Pino Apple Cone was reached, and the runners enjoyed getting down that steep ridge. A good pace was then set along the road to the Ross Creek Reservoir, where the runners split into two packs. The fast pack went ahead with the two deputy-captains, through tbe bush and across the golf links. About 100yds from home tbe whistle was blown for the run home, and after a close finish, E. Meggett beaded off D. Bilson and H. Beufeil for first place. The slow pack following a similar course, maintained a fair pace. UNIVERSITY. A pack of 15, under the whistle of Captain Stewart left the Kaikorai School and ran via the North Taieri road to Mount Grand. From there the pack cut down on to the race, where a handicap run was held. Sutherland winning from Woods. Cowan, and Whitehead. From the Southern Reservoir the pack followed the Kaikorai Valley home.

MORNINGTON. The Alornington Club held its onemile maiden handicap and one-mile open handicap at St. Kilda, 28 facing the starter, Air Sanders, who got the limit men—A-FNee, J. Hanley, Thomson (35sec) away smartly, with the rest of the field at 3scc: intervals, until the scratch men—Hall, Crooke, Roxburgh, Callister —got on their way. From the start the pace was fast, and the scratch men did not make much impression on the middle men, The race started on Lovers’ Lane, 10 chains from St. Kilda, and led towards St. Kilda, and then on to Victoria road, which was followed to the ear line, then back pn to Lovers’ Lane, finishing at the St. Kilda end. Turning off Victoria road Lamb (25sec), Hanley (25sec) were in the lead, with Moore (21sec), Thomson (21sec), T. Burton (6sec) close up. In the run down Lovers’ Lane Lamb held his lead to win from Aloore, with the rest of the field close up—l2 men coming in in the first ssec. Fastest time went to Hall and Roxburgh, who established a record for this track. The platings were: Actual race—Lamb 1, Aloore 2, W. Hanley 3; time, smin 26sec. Moore not being eligible for thfe race second place goes to Hanley, with Thomson third. Fastest time went to Roxburgh and Hall (4min 56sec). The results for the two races are; One mile maiden—Lamb 1, Hanley 2, Thomson 3. Lamb’s actual timo was smin. One mile, open—Alunro 1, Roxburgh 2, Hall 3. ST. KILDA. Ideal conditions prevailed for the St. Kilda Club’s annual reunion—an innovation introduced into the club’s syllabus, some two years ago, largely as the result of the enthusiasm of the captain of the club at that time. The popularity of the fixture was fully proved when an excellent field of 40 runners met at the St. Kilda Bathing Pavilion for the run* which was controlled by ex-members, R. Alercer being appointed captain and L. Buddicom and F. Greenfield deputy-captains. An enjoyable trail led along the beach to Lawyer’s Head, over tbe. headland, and then along Tomahawk Beach, where a stretch of cross-country was encountered. Tbe run home was held from Lawyer’s Head, and the members were given an opportunity to prepare for the three-mile handicap to be held on Satur-

day next. Prominent among the exmembers and supporters were Messrs J. Boardman (president), TV. Lovell (vice-pres dent), R. Alercer, L. Budicorn, F. Greenfield, V. Duel!, R. VVatson, W. Alore, C. Bissland, A. AFDonald, At. Vernon. All were pleased to see Eddie AFGarry present after his accident of two years ago. The run was followed by a tea in the Savoy. LEITH. Leith ran from Anglican Boys’ Home, Vauxhall. with a record attendance of 34 members. Under the whistle of Captain Anderson the pack set out on the road leading tp Tomahawk, and followed it for a short distance before striking across open country. A halt was made at a point overlooking the harbour on the one side and Tomahawk Lagoon on the other, a splendid view . being obtained. The trail continued to the soldiers’ monument, where greetings ' were exchanged with Dunedin Club. The pack continued over a varied course to 4YA. When the trail was resumed it led to the Highcliff road, where two packs were formed. The slow pack, under Deputy-captain Thomson, continued at a good pace along the road, A. Hanna being prominent in the run home. The fast pack, under Captain Anderson, cut across the fields down to the Portobello road, where a solid run was made.- Over the last two miles to Waverley the pace was on, R. AFKinlav and G. Alarkham leading the way. Aid run home was held. Members were later entertained at tea by Mr and Airs Gerrard. A social evening followed. ANGLICAN. Anglican ran from North-east Valley School, with an attendance of 25 members. The trail lay along the North road ■ to Normanby, thence via the Alain road to the Brown House. From there the fast pack, under the whistle of Road-Captain Divers, continued north for a short distance, leaving the road and circling Alount Zion to Bethnne’s Gully. The pack then descended to Norwood street through the now reserve. The run home from Normanby tram terminus resulted in T. Allen, L. I. Curtis, and TV. H. Ashby arriving in that order The slow pack, under the whistle of

Harrier-Captain Logan, left the Lorth road near JBroadacres, branching' across paddocks; thence along the ridge to Signal Hill. From here the pack descended the hill directly to the school. Prominent among the juniors were Randle and Miller.

ROAD CYCLING

‘ GALDER MAtKAY SERIES

The third race in the Calder Mack ay Cup series was run off by. the . Dunedin. Amateur Cycling Club. The event was in the nature ot a time trial, each, competitor having to ride the course from Vauxhall to Broad Bay and return by himself. There were 21 starters, and they were sent off at intervals of one minute. G. Homer, the only scratch man, gained the fastest time : by Imm oOscc from the next man. For the last two years lie has won this even; gaining first in the sealed handicap as well as the fastest time. He just'missed gaining the hat trick, haying to be content with being second in the ban* dicap to-day. His time of 41min 9se<l was exceptionally fast for this course. A. Umbers repeated his performance ol last week by again gaining second fast* est time.- R. Brown, who has already, won one race- of the present series,again gained first place inythe handi-* cap. G. Coburn, who was third ih the handicap, rode exceedingly well for his first race.
