INDIA’S UNTOUCHABLES
DECISION OF CONFERENCE BREAKAWAY FROM HINDUISM Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright HONDON, June 1. (Received June 2, at 11 a.m.) The Daily Telegraph’s ’ Bombay correspondent says:—The first mass breakaway of untouchables from Hinduism, which imposes numerous restrictions on the so-called depressed classes, occurred when 10,000 untouchables assembled in conference unanimously decided to change their religion as the only way by which a low-caste community can attain equality. It is believed that various sections will now embrace Islam, Christianity, or theosophy. It is expected that this action will lead to other breakaways from Hinduism among the 60,000,000 untouchables.
