Great Northern Hurdles

Prince of Orange Wins in Record Time The Smuggler Runs Second

The Auckland Racing Club's Croat Northern Steeplechase Meeting was opened at Ellerslie on Saturday in glorious weather. The track was in splendid order. There was a good attendance, and the totalisator handled £44,251, against £48,283 10s last year, ■when there. were only seven races on the programme—a decrease of £4,032 10s. The comparison is qualified by the fact that the first day of the meeting last year was the late King George’s birthday, a full holiday. A RACE WITHOUT PARALLEL. The Great Northern Hurdles was won by Prince of Orange in the record time of 4min 41sec. The race proved one of the most sensational races in the history of the event, victory finally going to the tenth' favourite, Prince of Orange, who was No. 13 and drew 13 at the barrier. The race was a chapter of accidents. The favourite, Jolly, Beggar, was in a handy position, with two fences to go, when he fell ; while Scotch Nation, the solid second fancy, ■ came to grief when in front at the hurdle in front of the members’ stand, breaking his near fetlock and having to be destroyed. This left Clarion Call fully 12 lengths in front, and after Jolly: Beggar had fallen .the result looked a foregone conclusion. However, he fell at the last fence, throwing his rider, who made a valiant attempt to regain the saddle, but failed. It was a race without parallel. From a good', even start, Scotch Nation led past the stands from Contact, Clan Ronald, The Smuggler, Clarion Call, and Thespis. Along the back Scotch Nation was out a length and a-half in front of Clarion Call, Contact, Thespis, The Smuggler, Benighted, Jolly Beggar, Prince of Orange, Wee Pat, Master Musk, King’s Archer, and Royal Limond. Count i Roussilon fell at the fence by the

three furlongs post, and Clarion Call, who was jumping brilliantly, assumed command passing the stands, being just clear of Scotch Nation, this pair having a big advantage over Contact, Thespis, Jolly Beggar, _ Prince of Orange, The Smuggler, Benighted, Wee Pat, and Master Musk. Scotch Nation fell at the second hurdle in the straight, while Benighted also came to grief, and Master Musk came down oven him. This left Clarion Call with a lead of 12 lengths over Thespis, Prince of Orange, Jolly Beggar, The Smuggler, Wee Pat, King’s Archer, and Royal Limond. Contact fell at this stage, and Clarion Call was out 20 lengths from Jolly Beggar at the top stretch, with a gap of two to Prince of Orange, Thespis, The Smuggler, and Wee' Pat.

'Jolly Beggar fell at the second last fence, and the order in the straight was: Clarion Call (fully 12 lengths in front of Prince of Orange), with 100yds to The Smuggler. King’s Archer, Thespis, Wee Pat, aud Royal Limond. The race looked all over, but Clarion Cali made a faulty jump at the last fence and lost his rider, leaving Prince of Orange to go on and win .by six lengths from The Smuggler, who beat Royal Limond by two lengths. Wee Pat was fourth, and then came King’s Archer. As the result of falls the riders Trillo (Benighted), Beale (Jolly Beggar), Carroll (Contact), and M'Gregor (Master Musk) were injured, although not seriously. DISQUALIFIED FOR SIX MONTHS. Following an inquiry into the running of Pukeko in the first division of the Jervois Handicap, it was decided that the horse was not run on its merits, and Pukeko and the rider (A. Jenkins) and owner-trainer (B. Burgess) were disqualified for six months under rule 282. Burgess and Jenkins have appealed t to the Auckland District Committee against their disqualification. The appeal will be heard to-morrow evening, DETAILED RESULTS.
