KENNEL NOTES

[By Defence.]

The fifth show of the North Otago Club proved an outstanding success, and the executive is congratulating itself on the growing popularity of its yearly outing. Local exhibitors did very well in strong competition, although best in show and best puppy were Christchurch owned. The former was Mr W. M. Jack’s latest importation, Talavera, Graceful, by ch Talavera Jupiter— Talavera Cleopatra, and the winning puppy, all breeds, was the same owner’s Ryburn Radio by ch Carsol of Caree (imp.)—Ryburn Request. Graceful was much admired by terrier men, but all seemed agreed that she is too masculine, while, in hjs breed classes, Radio was closely pressed by the local entrant, Messrs M. G. and E. W. Austen’s Mahalu Smokey, by ch Stocksmoor Smartset (imp.)—Portsdown Bounty (imp.). These owners showed also the • best under-six-months puppy in the show—the wee Scottie, Leithval Helgrave, just four months old. by ch Fairways Sensation —Leithval Mischief. This puppy caught everyone’s eye, and is indeed the best one of her age the writer has seen; and if she continues the way she has started she will be next to impossible to head off in the show ring.

fPbst sporting dog in show was also an imported animal—Messrs D. Farquharson and L. Smyth’s coloured cocker spaniel, Colinette Sister, by Dobrow Diamond—Burlesdon Dimple. As she had some very solid competition and was being judged by men who knew their cockers, this award proved Colinette Sister to be a front-ranker. The black cocker, Mr Hodge’s (Christchurch) ch Rossmount Scott, was made best opposite sex. The non-sporting cup also came to Dunedin ; Mrs It. Jory and Miss L. Grimmett winning it with their collie, Fay the of Glenavou, by ch Distinction of Clermont—Moonbeam of Glenavon, born in quarantine when ch Backwood Flower was imported. Best opposite sex non-sporting was also a collie, Mrs Leckie’s (Milton) ch Rajah of Lochiel. It would be a task now to count the shows at which Rajah has collected the challenge. Some good toys were exhibited, although, numerically, competition was not very strong. The best of this section was also a Dunedin competitor, Blondie of Strathlone belonging to Mrs Sutherland. Blondie is Auckland bred, being by Sambala, by Cumbala Bennie (imp.)—Tsu Tsi of Strathlone. In smooth fox terriers Mr A. Fraser had a regular field day. Brownlow Brutus, by ch Brownlow' Buzz—B. Vixey, is now only one point off his championship’, while in the bitch classes his two daughters, Springhill Babette and S. Fifine, carried all before them, the open being a real triumph, Babette getting first, her mother, Brownlow Pamela, second, and little sister, Fifine, third. *

In Scotties Dr Smith Morten won all he could, his ch Roukeu Emigrant (imp.), by ch Rouken Rogue—Bric-a-Brac, getting the specials for best of the breed and best opposite sex terrier in show.

In the Scottio bitches some very good ones met, the doctor’s Cumbrae Marie Rose of Australia (Oronsay Premier, imp.—Ornsay Marie Rose, imp.) just scraped home from the Austen Bros.’ Leithval Mischief (Australia), by ch Bon Accord— -.Bell, These two have met on four occasions; and each’ has won .twice, which would seem’ :to prove that there is litlo or nothing., between them. In Cairns, Mrs Brack’s ch Beau Brummel seems to have established an inferiority complex among his brethren in the south, and is left to uphold the honour of his breed practically alone. He has now paraded at neatly a dozen shows without having his colours lowered. ;

West Highland White Terriers were poorly represented, Mr J. M‘Donald,, of Timaru, getting the special with Angus of Westmere; the bitch section having only one entrant, Mrs Brack’s puppy, Lochiel Miss Cavach. Mr F. G. Seville, of Fairlie, and Mr E. C. Hayhurst, or Oamani, showed between them seven of the eight Sealyharas competing, the former winning with his Australian-bred dog Degannwy Rex, and the latter with Harptree Dinah, a bitch bred by Captain Olphert, of Lower Hutt. Only three bull terriers! Mr R. W. Brown, of Dunedin, won the special with his Keverne Kilfane, another Australian.

Irish Terriers ranked high for both quality and quantity. In puppy, under sis months, no less than six were entered, three little brothers, all bred by Mr E. Vernor, from his ch Richley Rufus and Roscommon Biddy, being first, second, and third. In the open, out of four dogs entered, three were full champions, ch Richley Rufus, the sire of the three winning pups, getting the special, which speaks well for consistency on the part of the judge; and, indeed, for the breeding of this particular terrier family. In Airedales the competition was again poor, Mrs Bennett’s Austral Saga (Australia), by ch. Walnut Brian (imp.), ch. Easthorpe Juniper (imp.) getting the special, while a daughter of Saga’s won the bitch classes. Black cockers were well represented, “Bay” dogs bred by Mr Alex. Begg holding their own all through until they met ch. llossmount Scott in the open—a good performance.

The coloured cookers drew the best entry in the show, no less than 1G being forward. In puppy dog, under 12 months, there were seven competitors, with D. O’Connor’s Radiant Stormcloud (Churehleigh Stormboy (imp.), Colinette Sister (imp.) gaining first place, followed by Mr L. Smyth’s Radiant Reflector, a lull brother. Open dogs had six, Mr A. E. Moore, of Christchurch, winning with Wayland Premier, Radiant Reflector being second. In open bitches, Messrs D. Farquharson and L. Smyth’s (Dunedin) imported Colinette Sister won, and was made best coloured cocker; while her son, Radiant Stormcloud, collared the special for best cocker puppy in show. Mrs F. Parker’s (Dunedin) ch. Bracken of Beechwood, was best English setter, the same owner’s Craigforth Adventuress (Bracken’s daughter) being the bitch winner.

In Irish setters the bitches were tv ice as numerous as the dogs, although the latter supplied the Best of the breed. This was Mrs Rita Rothwell’s Taid of Trashua, by eh. Tara of Trnshna. Dr Rothwell’s Hartsbourne Jennifer (Hartsbourne Ruadri, imp.), rtartsbourne Solija (imp.) won in bitches. Mr F. E. Waterworth’s Gloucester Model was alone in pointers. Of the 13 Labradors entered, Mrs F. Crawshaw’s Glinka JJonella won in both six and twelve months’ puppy classes, while the Christchurch dog, Mr Val (Seaumont’s Prince Hargood (by Eilyer Ron, imp.), won the open and special for best Labrador. A locally-owned hitch, Mr IV. Stewart’s Onyx of Ingestre, won her sex classes. Mi's M. Shaw’s Master Roy, a good eurly-coated retriever, is still collect-

ing challenges, and should soon have his title. Mrs J. J. Nee’s Borzoi, from Christchurch, won the special for hia breed, although many owners thought him too much like a female and rather; lucky to win. In bulldogs, Mrs M. Darling’s Banklull Bill, by Shildon Jowie, was the pick of the three dogSj and Mr K. C. Broad’s puppy, Pembndge Maimoa o| Alswel, by ch. Suncrest Bronze Nugget, the best of the opposite sex. Mrs Brack’s French bulldog (Lochiel Tourmaline (alone), won another point to-' wards her title. Rough-coated collies saw some good ones paraded, ch. Rajah of Lochiel being made best dog, and Taythe of Glen Avon best of the breed. Only one Old English sheep dog, a son of famous ch. Opihi Rupert: one Samoyede, Mr I). Brain’s White Princess of the Yukon, a lovely bitch this, worthy of decent competition; one. St, Bernard, Mr H. Brown’s Bernese Viking ; and one Great Dame, Mr L. D. Porter’s Monarch, a son of Samson of Oughborough (imp.). Big Alsatian classes are now a thing of the past, but some good dogs turned up at Oamaru. Miss L. Grcig’s Viking of Chingford, by ch. Wixhun ofjßesarf x ch. Flash of Arnaverne winning the open and special for best Alsatian, the open bitcli class going to Mr W. L, Notman’s Jennette of Lafayette.
