WINTER RACING

SOUTH CANTERBURY J.C. A SUCCESSFUL MEETING EPRIS AMD EMISSARY WIH Favoured with a perfect whiter day, bright sunshine, with no wind, there was one of the largest attendances ever seen, at Washdyke when the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s two-day Winter Meeting was concluded on a much jßrmer track than Thursday’s. The fields were again large, and the racing more interesting than on the first day. Winners were not so easily 'picked as on Thursday, and when Haere Tonu won the opening event he returned the largest dividend that has been paid in the South Island this season. Another big dividend followed in the next race, yet this uneven division of the first two pools did not limit the wagering, and during the afternoon £10,741 10s was handled, as compared with £B,IBB 10s oh the one-day meeting held in June last season. The total for the two days, £IB,OOO. was only £2BO 10s less than was handled at the two one-day meetings last year. The principal race was won very convincingly by Epris, who scored his first win since he scored iri the Wnter Cup. The open sprint race was won all the way by Emissary, whose improved form was the subject of an inquiry by the Judicial Committee. His trainer and rider’s explanations that the changed atmospherical and track conditions as compared with the first day were responsible for the improvement in a horse that had recently been operated on for wind infirmities. The Judicial Committee also met to consider the bumping finish .in the steeplechase, and after Trisox’s rider’s explanation that owing to an injured arm he was not able to keep his mount from boring in on Monastic, it was decided to reverse the judge’s placings. The meeting, which was well managed, was one of the most successful the club has held for many years, and the experiment of holding a two-day fixture will probably be continued next season. Time, Imin 12 2-osec, NOTES ON THE EVENTS [By St. Clair.] Solwit was sent out a few pounds better backed than Signaller or Courtyard for the Pukaki Hurdles. Courtyard led Nightcdp andi Footwork over the first two fences, but hit the third very hard, and Nightcap went on in front of Haeretonu and led along the back from Courtyard, Solwit, and Hunting Go. Before reaching the far turn Haeretonu took charge and led Wexford Bridge, Solwit, Hunting Go, and Signaller into the straight. Hacretonu was well clear in front of Wexford Bridge at the last hurdle, and won by two lengths from Signaller, who beat Wexford Bridge by the same margin. Hunting Go was ,fourth. The winner had only £44 invested on his chance, and paid a sensational dividend. Land Raid was backed down to a very short price for the Southburn Hack Handicap, with Swordstick and Silver Coat next in demand. Call Money dislodged his rider (E. Baker) before the start and took no part in the race. Silver Coat was the first to break the line and then gave way to Swordstick, Silver Sail, and the favourite, who led Silver Coat and Rebel Lad into the straight. At the distance Swordstick was almost clear and then Rebel Lad challenged. In a good finish Rebel Lad beat Swordstick by a head, with Silver Coat a length and a-half away third. Silver Sail and Pink Del were next. E. Baker was caught by the tapes under the chin and severely hurt, being removed to the Tiraaru Hospital. , Royal Doulton carried nearly a quarter of the pool on the Wai-iti Harness Trot Handicap, with the Aide do CampPosto Haste bracket and Chaise the best backed of the others. Janet Gaynor led Roval Doulton, Serene Bingen, and Sylvie’s Best for six furlongs. Then Fav Rey moved up into fourth place, Serene Bingen dropping out. After rounding the far turn Janet Gaynor broke her hopples and dropped hack, leaving the favourite to lead Fay Rev and Aide de Camp into the straight. At the distance Fay Rey headed off Royal Doulton, and beat the favourite home by three lengths. Aide de Camp was four lengths away third, and Sylvie’s Best fourth. Queen of Song, with W. Hogan, IJlb over weight, up, was made a better favourite than Cranford or Epris in the Elloughton Handicap. Moneyless was the smartest out, but after a furlong gave way to Trivet and Metal Bird. Trivet led Metal Bird, Cranford, and Daring Deed along the back, ami at the far turn Metal Bird ran up to Trivet, and this pair led Cranford, Moneyless. Queen of Song, and Epris into the straight. At the distance Metal Bird had Trivet beaten, but then succumbed to Epris, who beat him by two lengths. Trivet was a length away third, with Golden Dart and Cranford next. Lycidas was withdrawn from the Pareora Steeplechase, and Pahu was made a much better favourite than Trisox or Monastic. Barrington and Red Lance were the early leaders, Palm hitting the first fence hard, and with Trisox trailed the field for a mile. Crossing the stand double the second time Red Lance was in charge from Wykemist. Royal Buck, Monastic, and Trisox. At the fence near the seven

furlong post Red Lance hit hard and lost some ground, but was in charge again at the next fence from Monastic and Trisox. These three were 10 lengths in front of Pahu racing across the top. Trisox and Monastic landed over the last fence together, where Pahu ran off, and in a lighting finish Trisox beat Monastic by a neck, with Red Lance 10 lengths third. Wykemist was a bad fourth. The placing of the first and second horses were reversed on the grounds of Trisox boring in on Monastic from the last fence Ponty was made a slightly better favourite than Jack Ahoy for the Ternnka Hade Handicap. Execution led Vocal and Madame Pompadour over the first furlong, then Vocal took charge and led Execution and Ponty round the far turn. Vocal was first into the straight from Madame Pompadour and Perpetus, who ran out wide. At the distance Execution shot through on "the rails, but then Ponty challenged, and just got up to beat Execution by a head. Jack Ahoy, who was pocketed on the rails, was a neck away third, and Vocal a good fourth. Peter Silk was made a favourite than Superior flank or U. Scott, lr.it both Peter Silk and U. Scott broke badly. Sunny Jack led Hazel Russell, Trinidad. King’s Drive, and Lottie Guy through the straight. Racing along the back Sunny Jack was just in front of Hazel Russell and King s Drive, and there was no change in the leading division to the home turn, where King’s Drive just headed Sunny Jack. At the distance Vanity Fair shot out and challenged King’s Drive, to beat him a neck. Lottie Guy was two lengths off third, followed by Hazel Russell and Harlequin. Emissary was made a strong order for the Farewell Handicap, with Half Note and Silver Streak next fancied. The favourite was first to show out, but after a furlong Arrow Rose headed him. Emissai-y joined Arrow Rose on the home turn and drew out to win easily by three lengths from Lochlaggan, wlio finished strongly, beating Moneyless by two lengths. Capital and Half Note were next.
