THE CORONATION
MAY 27 NEXT YEAR PREPARATIONS TO BE PUT IN TRAIN Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, May 24. (Received May 26, at 2 p.m.) The ‘ Daily Mail,’ announcing that coronation will be held on Thursday, May 27, 1937, says the King, next Thursday, will sign the Order in Council setting in motion the coronation arrangements, after which the scarletrobed Kings of Arms, with heralds and pursuivants, on Friday will proclaim the coronation date at the Temple Bar, Charing Cross, the Royal Exchange, and St. James’s Palace. Then the Privy Council immediately begins the establishment of a court of claims under the presidency of the Lord Chancellor, which exists only to decide which English citizens will be privileged to attend the King at the coronation including who will carry each of his gloves and spurs, who will be the hereditary poulterer and bearer of the third sword, also w'hether the mayors of the Cinque Ports will carry the canopy over the King. All claimants upheld will have excellent positions at the coronation, but many claims will probably be rejected, like the woman who claimed to be “ chief herb strewer for King George’s coronation.” The King’s crown has already been removed from the Tower to enable it to fit His Majesty. The Duke of York, as heir presumptive, will make a State visit to Wales in 1937, representing the King at the formal equivalent to the coronation. He will also travel to foreign Courts formally to announce the accession.
