ALARM OVER FACTORIES BILL

POSTPONEMENT URGED Evidence of alarm at the provisions of the Factories Amendment Bill was shown at a meeting of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, and in a report of the meeting supplied it was stated that it was the intention of manufacturers to urge the Government to postpone the passage of the Bill until fresh representations can be made about its provisions. Discussion was bold yesterday upon the amending provisions of the Bill, especially those clauses which provide for increases in wages rates, in addition to substantial rises in the rates for holidays and overtime, which, it was stated, is unavoidable in some industries. It was stated that it was considered by tho manufacturers that the continued existence of some industries would be imperilled by a heavy increase in costs because of the new provisions. These industries, it was stated, gave employment to thousands of workers whoso living depended on the success of the industry.
