ONEHUNGA CENTENARIAN FIRST SAW AUCKLAND 81 YEARS AGO [Per United Pr.Ess Association.! AUCKLAND. May 11. Still enjoying good health, although naturally feeble, Mrs M. A- Hills, ol Onehunga. will celebrate her 101st birthday to-morrow. Her sight and hearino’ are failing, but her mental faculties show but slight signs of impairment. Mrs Hills rises about ll_a.ni. daily. One of her chief pleasures is motoring, and she enjoys noting the wonderful changes in and around the city since she first saw it 81 years ago, Sho is as well as anyone 20 years her junior could wish to be She has never had a serious illness, and, although she says that she has always observed commonsense rules of health, she is not a food faddist. “ I just enjoy.” she remarked, “ whatever is placed before me, hut my appetite is not what it was.” During her centenary celebrations last year she remarked: “If I live to see another birthday wo must have a sucking pig for dinner.” Her wish will be gratified. Mrs Hills has lived under five British sovereigns, having been born at Woolwich Green in Kent when William IV. was King. She arrived in Auckland as a bride with her husband by Ihe ship Merchantman in 1855. Mr Hills, who died J 4 years ago. established a bakery business, and they retired to live iu Onehunga 72 years ago. There ar> 17 grandchildren. 16 great-grand-children, and one great-great-grand-child.
