WINTER RACING

OAMARU T.G. FAVOURITE DOUBLE WINS GRAND MOGUL AMD DE SOTO Tlio Oaiimru Trotting Club's Winter fleeting was held in fine though chilly weather, when a large crowd witnessed an interesting day's sport. The grass track was in excellent order, despite heavy rain earlier in the week and a hard frost overnight. Mr G. J. Barton’s five-year-old gelding, Grand Mogul, more than compensated for his disappointing showing at Forbury Park, where he galloped for nearly a furlong in his only start at the meeting. He moved off quickly at Oamaru, and after biting the front, with nearly a round covered, he never looked like being defeated. Like .De Soto and Blair Athol, who scored comfortable wins in their respective engagements, Grand Mogul was staunchly supported by investors. Blair Athol’s victory in the Papakaio Handicap was a most impressive one for a threc-ycar-old, and he should win again before the end of the season. During the day the totalistaor handled £13,746*. as compared with £11,771 last year—an increase of £1,9751.

The grass track was in excellent condition, following a hard frost, for the Oamaru Trotting Club’s Winter Aieeting. The weather was fine, but a cold breeze made conditions unpleasant. The attendance was large. Innovation Handicap. After going a furlong, Parachute had charge from Patty Todd and Lord Ernleigh, with Isis and Beatrice Bingen handy. There was little change in the order throughout, and Parachute hung on gamely to win by a neck, despite a strong challenge from Patty Todd and the strongly-fancied Lord Ernleigh, who was never more than three lengths away, in third place, but right up on Parachute and Patty Todd entering the straight. Swift Guy was fourth, ami Beatrice Bingen showed up prominently until under three furlongs from home, when she broke.

Some Promising Novices. The public appeared to have some difficulty in selecting a favourite from the many novices engaged in the Advance Handicap. The three-year-old Jack Potts colt. Superior Rank, started on the rails, and showed out first from Royal Doulton, Effie Parrish, Almont Cling, and Sylvie’s Best over a furlong, when Effie Parrish shot to the front from Sylvie’s Best and Superior Rank, with Janet Gaynor and Parisienno moving up. Effie Parrish led the field for over a mile when Parisienno raced to the front at the far turn, with Superior Rank still lying third from Royal Doulton and .Maltravers. who broke badly shortly after the start, through interference. The order was the same into the straight, whore Superior Rank shot to the front and won comfortably. Effie Parrish, who paid a huge dividend on the win machine, boat the fast-fin-ishing Maltravers by half a length. Parisienue, the promising two-year-old from Berry’s stable, was two lengths away fourth, followed by Royal Doulton and Donald Dim.

Won Impressively. Beginning from the rails, Myrna Loy hopped out smartly in the Stewards’ Handicap from Reylena, Moana Tama, Casanova, John Mauritius, Wee Wrack, Rod Flush ami Ma Ware, the field being strung out. After three furlongs Myrna Loy broke and dropped right back, Moana "araa taking charge over the next two furlongs, when the field closed up. Passing the stand after the six furlongs, Ma Warn had charge from Moana Tama, and Doubt at the head of a hunched field. There was a keen struggle for places after entering the back stretch, where Ala Waro still maintained an advantage from Wee Wrack, Doubt. Casanova, and Purveyor. Entering the straight. Wee Wrack was just showing clear of Ma Waro and Casanova, with Purveyor just clear of the bunch. Before rounding the turn, Casanova broke, and badly interfered with the field, settling the chances of about six horses o| finishing in a place. Ma Waro staved on iinpressivclr. and Woo Wrack. Red Flush, and Lucky Jack fought out the minor places A Winner All the Way. Grand Mogul gave a sterling performance in the President's Handicap, taking the lend after going six furlongs and holding the advantage to the winning post. He sailed along in front in attractive fashion, and never looked like being beaten. Consistent Grace M'Ehvyn kept with the loaders throughout, and finished only a length behind the favourite. Francis Lincoln finished fast to beat Taxpayer by a neck for third place. None of the other contestants looked dangerous at any stage of the journey. Favourite Just Beaten. The favourite, Royal Romance, figured prominently throughout the Waikaura Handicap, and was only beaten by a neck over the final furlong by Tyrone Lass, who was about 15 lengths back in third place to Victor Bingen and Royal Romance after going nearly two furlongs. Brilliant Blair Athol. The tbrccc-year-old. Blair Athol, revealed unusual brilliance in beating a strong field in fbe Papakio Handicap. Double Great went to a good lead from Lorciia and Blair Athol, but the latter

quickly rushed up to second place, and after two furlongs was followed by Llewellyn’s Pet and Doris Derby, with Stirling ' Lady, Greenmantle, and Sea Trail. There was little change over the next six furlongs, when Loretta ran up into third place, followed by Stirling Lady. Double Great, and Blair Athol. They entered the straight on even terms, followed by Greenmantle, whe moved up fast before reaching the straight from Loretta and Doris Derby. Jn a thrilling finish Greenmantle overtook Double Great 100yds from home, but Blair Athol responded gamely to Ids strong challenge. Loretta was fourth. threelengths back followed by Sea Trail Vologda broke up badly .at the start. Hot Favourite Scores. A hot favourite in Do Soto led throughout in the Enfield Handicap and won going away' by three lengths. Over tho early * stages Homeward. Peter Locanda, and Llewellyn’s Pride were Ins nearest attendants. Little Nelson moved up into third place after going three furlongs, and over the next three furlongs Llewellyn - Bride displaced Peter Locanda. in a bunched licit! going into the back L'ev.'cl.yn s Pride met with interference, and was replaced bv Francis Lincoln anti Peter Locantia. The order was unchanged going down the hack, and De Soto was first into the straight from Little Nelson. Homeward, and Francis Lincoln. De Soto easily withstood a strong challenge from Homeward and Little Nelson, who was only a head clear of Peter Locanda. A Southland Success.

In the mile saddle Symmetry quickly established a two lengths lead and had command until after entering the straight, where Fairhaven, lying in second place all the way, shot to the front and won by two lengths from Happy Knight, who beat Symmetry by a neck, Eighteen Carat finishing up close fourth. Lough Guy and Admiral Bingen lost their chances at the start.

NOTES OH THE EVENTS [Special to the ‘Stas.’] The High-weight Event. Grand Review and Honour’s Lass closely contested favouritism in the Braekenfield High-weight Handicap, and they fought out the finish. Frontage assumed command from Courtyard and Grand Review at the end of a furlong, but did not last long, and Honour’s Lass, taking up the role of pacemaker, had a break of four lengths entering the straight from Grand I" ■ view. Rose of Tralee, Colossian, and Final Shot. Grand Review made a game effort to get up to Honour’s L- . but the latter, ridden out, lasted to win by half a length. Colossian was a fair third in front of Courtyard, with Rose of Tralee. Final Shot, Frontage. and Note Issue following at intervals. Honour's Lass owed her victory mainly to the useful break she was able to establish after two furlongs had been covered, as Grand Review, who conceded her a lot of ground commencing tire short run home, had h • fully extended at the post. Colossian showed improvement on recent efforts, hut Courtyard was disappointing. Polygraph Makes Good.

The Novice Stakes resulted in a close finish. Cyrillian. Gay Lyric, Radio Star, and Arrow Glen were most prominent early, and there was not nr between Gay Lyric, Cyrillian. and Arrow Glen turning for home, but Cyrillian was inclined to bore out, and Gay Lyric, hugging Hie rails, soon had a clear advantage. The last-named looked to be an easy winner until Polygraob, who was close in behind the leaders entering the straight, put in a telling run, and got up to heat Gay Lyric bv a head. Cyrillian was a close third, clear of Arrow Glen and Radio Star.

Polygraph was having bis first race for his new trainer. D. O’Connor, and tbis was his best effort to date. Gay Lvric, a daughter of the well-narfonned Gay Sonnet, put up an impressive fight, and will run some good races next season. Cyrillian lost valuable ground turning into the straight, and also kept Arrow Glen wide ont.

Ginger Jack Wins. A large field contested the Kowai Trot, and several bad their chances extinguished in the early stages. Major Guy was H'c first to show out and led Sea Lord. Native Son, Windsor Lass, and Frisco Silk going out of the straight the first time. The last named rushed to the front in the back stretch, but was soon displaced by Post Haste, who led into the straight from Windsor Lass, Pukeuri, and Bill Grattan with Ginger Jack making a fast move from the back. The last named continued his effort in the straight and wore down Post Haste to boat him ) half a length. Pukeuri was a goo 1 third in front of Bill Grattan, Windsor Lass, and Major Guy.

A Decisive Win. Rebel Chief was made a staunch favourite for the Glasneviu Handicap, but was beaten into third place. He took charge shortly after the start, but was later joined by Capital, who had a elear advantage entering the straight from Rebel Chief, Courtyard, and Grand Review together. Courtyard finished strongly to bent Rebel Chief, but was unable to make much impression on Capital. who won well by a short length. Rebel Chief was a neck away, a head in front of Polydora. Capital’s pace during the middle stages enabled him to gain a useful break, and he thus had his opponents in trouble over the last half-mile. Courtyard shaped better than in his previous engagements, but Rebel Chief did not race up to expectations. Poly-

dora’s form suggested she will soon bcamongst the stake earners again. Never in Danger. Execution carried halt of the machine total in the G. 13. Stalky Memorial Hack Handicap, and there was never any doubt about the result. Going off at three-quarter pace. Impossible led out from Chidden and Execution, and there was little improvement until Execution ran to the front five furlongs from home, and, increasing her lead rounding the far and borne turns, she was four lengths in front of Chidden, with a similar gap to Impossible entering the straight. She was being eased up sUyds from the post, ana impossible got to within a length of her, but only under sufferance. Chidden was a poor third. Execution outclassed her two opponents. She has had three wins and two second placings in live starts, and will carry on as a winner. Impossible did some good work in the last two furlongs, and easily accounted for Chidden, who failed to show any response to her rider’s efforts from the home turn onward l . Dual Success. Polygraph accounted for a good field of hacks in the Seadown Handicap. Swordstick and Arrownilla carried on in front to the half-mile, where Colombo moved up to Swordstick, with Polygraph also improving his position. Swordstick had a slight lead from Colombo, Polygraph, and Sovereign Lady entering the straight, but did not go on, and Polygraph gradually drew to the front from Colombo. Sovereign Lady, who did not get a clear run, was going better over the final stages than at any other stage of the race. Colombo did well in the face of his little racing of late, while Swordstick showed the lack of recent galloping. Cranford Returns. Moonbeam, Lady Graceful, and Cranford were fairly evenly supported iu the Amberley Handicap, and the lastnamed had an easy win. He quickly assumed command, and led throughout. He was followed into the straight by Moonbeam and Lady Graceful together, and although Moonbeam comfortably accounted for Lady Graceful, she had no chance of disputing Cranford’s position. Final Shot was always well in the rear. Cranford had no trouble in mastering the distance, _ the furthest he has travelled during his career. Moonbeam shaped satisfactorily, but Lady Graceful performed poorly. She got away well, and was favourably enough placed throughout to have every chance. Favourite Fails. Chaste was sent out a pronounced favourite for the Teviotdale Trot, but did not move off well, and was never in evidence. Major Guy, Chieftainess, Irish Aggie, and Elite Rey were the earlv leaders, and there was little change until the far turn, where Native Son moved up to be on terms with Major Guv and Elite Rey tinning forborne. with Irish Aggie and Chieftainess close up. Native Son and Elite Rey engaged in a prolonged struggle, the former gaining a half-length verdict. Irish Aggie was a good third, with Major Guv and Chieftainess next. Karoro fell at the straight entrance, and her owner-driver, G. I', Clarke, was removed to hospital. WAIKATO T.C.
