CITY OF CANBERRA'S CAPTAIN
Captain H. 1C Jackson. of flic steamer City of Canberra, at present visiting Lyttelton, served two years of his apprenticeship on the Shaw, Savill, ami Albion Company's barque Akaroa, under Captain A. Murray, now of Dunedin, and better known in Lyttelton as the late, master of the steamer Cygnet. Captain .Jackson later served under Captain 'l'. .Howling in the Invercargill. and Captain T. iJarion, of the Crusader. .In referring to his old masters. Captain Jackson said iliac they belonged to a class of sailor of which few existed to-day. Captain .Murray was a- very hard man, hut a splendid sailor. Captain Bowling was a fighter who could “ lay out ” half a dozen men and then look for more. He himself had seen Captain Bowling “ lay ont ” six Norwegians who had hoarded his ship to attack him as a result of an argument with another Norwegian. Leaving sail. Captain Jackson was second officer of the Gothic, and later transferred to the Karamea. During the war lie was in charge ot ihe transport AJ.‘J fs.s. JRatnnaJ, was present at the landing at Gallipoli, and was chased by a submarine during the time he was carrying munitions in the North Sea and Mediterranean. Captain Jackson, who is himself an artist, is connected with a family of artists and newspaper people. Mr< Jackson, who has iravelled all over li • world with tier husband, is a cartoonist. and is related to Will JJyson. and is connected by marriage with Lionel LimKay. An acquaintance of Captain Jackson is .Mr David Low. the cartoonist. formerly of Christchurch, and now in .London.
