TOBACCO TRADE
NEW MARKETING SCHEME RETAILERS, MERCHANTS, AND MANUFACTURERS COMBINE A novel scheme for the marketing of tobacco and cigarettes was inaugurated at an important conference of representatives of the tobacco trade, held in Wellington last week. As the outcome of representations made by the Retail Tobacconists’ Federation, it was decided to set up a council comprising four representatives from each of the retailers, merchants, and manufacturers and/or agents, in whose hands will he the responsibility of arranging all details of a scheme for the marketing of tobacco and cigarettes. The conference was marked by a spirit of co-operation among all branches of the trade. Our informant states that the adoption of the scheme will mean that every branch of the industry will receive an adequate, but only an adequate, return for the services which they render to the general public. As far as can be ascertained the idea of bringing all branches of the trade—retail, wholesale, and manufacturing—together on a council is a novel one, and it is confidently hoped that it will be so satisfactory that it will be followed in other industries and in other countries.
The scheme to be devised by the council will be put into operation not later than September 1.
