TROTS IN SEA OF MUD

FOftMIRY CLUB’S WINTER MEETING 0. E. HMPER SCORES MAIN DOUBLE GREAT WOOD'S OUTSTANDING CONSISTENCY South-westerly squalls, with intermittent hail, prevailed for the concluding day of the Forbnry Park Trotting Club’s Winter Meeting. Despite such miserable conditions—which after all were only seasonable—a fair crowd was present when the meeting began, and it swelled considerably during the afternoon. Considering the heavy rain experienced overnight, the track was in surprisingly satisfactory order at the start, but it became badly cut up after the second race, and was quickly turned into a sea of mud. With Willow Ware and Sunny Morn 0. E. Hooper won the two principal events on the programme, the former providing a repetition of his first day’s performance, and Sunny Morn Snatching a last-minute victory from the favourite, Supertax, in the Farewell Handicap. The outstanding performance of the meeting was the consistency shown by Great Wood in the races for unhoppled trotters. After collecting an easy double on the first day of the meeting, Great Wood ran second in the Tahuna Handicap to-day and scored an easy victory on his second appearance. _ At the conclusion of this race the Judicial Committee held an inquiry into the interference near the finishing tape of Great Wood by Royal Romance, but it was decided that any interference that did occur was quite unintentional, and no action was taken. In the Royal Handicap Young Travis failed to move off the mark at the start, and after walking about 100yds stopped and was later reported as having died on the spot. Young Travis was responsible for a surprise win on the first day, and returned his patrons a big dividend. He was a five-year-old horse from Travis Axworthy—Belle Bingen, and was regarded by his connections as a valuable asset. The totalisator handled £16,278 during the day. On the second day of the club’s winter meeting last year, which was held on Wednesday, June 5, the investments amounted to £30,419*.
