MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Gaelic Society of New Zealand was held in the Returned Soldiers’ Association Hall last evening. Chief Keith Cameron
and Chieftains K. MacDonald, W. H. MacLeod, Alex, AlacKenzie, Alex. Alatheson, and Angus MacLennan were piped to tho platform by Air Kenneth Oamrtron, the society's piper. Tire Chief thanked members for having recently re-elected him ns chief of the society. He also took the opportunity of informing members that the Council of Management bad decided that every fourth monthly meeting in future would be devoted to ballroom dancing only in order to increase tho pleasure of the younger members in the society. The Chief expressed the deep regret of members at the death of the secretary’s mother, Mrs Allan AlacLean, lately of Bishopscourt, Dunedin, a native of Lonhaber, Scotland, who died last week at her home at Clinton, at, the great age of 92 years, highly esteemed by all who knew her. A* a tribute to her memory, the audience stood while Air Kenneth Cameron played the pipe lament ‘ Lochaber No More.’ ■;
The Chief welcomed to the meeting Mr George Currie, whom he congratulated on his recent election to the position of president of the Dunedin Burns Club, and he was piped with Highland honours to the platform by the official piper. The hall was filled despite the wet evening, and the following excellent programme was enthusiastically received by the large audience: —The society’s choir, under Choirmaster Robert Scott, with Miss A. Kennedy (accompaniste), Gaelic songs Caisteal a’ Gliune ’ and ‘ Thug Ml Lamb - d’on Kileanach ’; Miss Loela Robertson, Highland dance, Seann Triuhhais; Miss Doris Darracott, songs, ‘ Better Bide a Wee ’ and ‘ Hail. Caledonia’; Miss Dorothy Sligo, songs, 1 Whistle, My Lad ’ and ‘ Waiata Poi ’ ; Mr Charles Smith, humorous sketch, ‘The Church Fancy Fair’; Bard Angus MacLennan, Gaelic songs, ‘ 'Eilean a’ Fhraoich ’ and ‘ Eilean Mo Ghaol ’; Mr Stewart Fox, songs, ‘ The Cameron Men ’ and ‘ Gae Bring Tae Me ’; Master Janies Flctt, sword dance; Mr George Currie, songs, ‘ A Fine Man John ’ and ‘The Inversneckie Grocer’: the choir. Gaelic songs, ‘ A Chuthag and ‘Mairi Laghach ’; Miss_ Dorothy Sligo, songs, ‘ AVithin a Milo ’ and ‘Oor Kailyard ’ ; the reel o’ Tulloch was danced by Misses Audrey Ramsay, Lorraine Maclffierson. Margaret Harris, and Peggy Black; Mr George Currie, songs, ‘ I’m Feared of Mistress MTvay ’ and ‘ Silly AA’illie ’; Miss Dons Darracott. songs, ‘My Heart Is Sair and ‘ Love AVill Find a Way ' ; Mr Stewart Fox. songs, ‘ Mary ’ and ‘ Grannie’s Highland Ha me ’ : Misses Eileen Bovin and L. MacPhcrson, national dance. ‘ Double Hornpipe Mrs Roderick Macßac, Gaelic songs, ‘ Eilean Mo Chridho ’ and ‘ 0 Nach Till Thu Rninn a Ris.’ The national dances wore contributed h v Miss Daphne Allan’s pupils, and Mr K. Cameron played for them. The vocalists’ accompanistos were Misses A. M. George and A. Kennedy.
