BEAN ROCK LIGHT, The task of laying a submarine cable from the waterfront road to Bean Rock, in the centre of Auckland Harbour, for the electrification of the light there was accomplished on Tuesday, states the Auckland ‘ Herald.’ The new light, which will he about five times as strong as the existing acetylene one, is expected to be in operation about the end of next week. The 5,000 ft of cable imported by the Auckland Harbour Board for the purpose was in the form of a large coil, weighing nine tons. It was mounted on a barge, which was towed by two launches. The shore end of the cable was passed ashore near Bastion Point, and made fast to a terminal pole on the outside of the road. The launches then towed the barge slowly across the harbour towards the rock, and the cable was paid out on to the sea-bed. Care had to he taken over the last few hundred feet, where the harbour bed rises in the rocky formation on the summit of which the beacon stands, and the services of a diver were employed to lay the cable so as to ensure that no damage would he done to it by wave action. The last few feet of the cable were then connected to the beacon. The new light will be of 350 candle-power, giving a beam of about 4,000 candle - power after passing through the lens of the lantern. The character of the light, which marks the harbour approaches with a white beam, with green and red sectors on either 'side, will remain unchanged, and it will continue to give three onesecond flashes at second intervals, every eight seconds, as at present. However, the flashing will he produced by a shuting apparatus, instead of by the extinguishing of the flame. NEW MOTOR VESSEL For Transtasman Service. A new motor vessel of 1,500 tons is to be built shortly in Scotland for the Watchlin Shipping Company, and Gaptain A. F. The Watchlin Line at present owns and operates the two ntotor ships Port Waikato and Port Whangarei, maintaining a regular service between Auckland, Wellington, and South Island ports.' The Port Waikato is also used in the company s intercolonial cargo trade. When the new and larger vessel arrives in New Zealand waters she will be used exclusively in the transtasman cargo service, enabling the two present ships to maintain a more frequent service on the New Zealand coast, while the new vessel will provide a more regular intercolonial service.
