ANZAC STAMPS

ENCOURAGING RETURNS £876 4/- TAKEN IN FOUR DAYS Although the Anzac commemoration stamps h..ve only been on sale a week, their success is assured, there not only being numerous inquiries from local residents, but also from overseas. The first figures concerning the sale of these stamps in the Otago postal district are now available, and for the first four days sales total the surprising figure of £B7O 4s. This figure represents the total sales made from the time the first stamp was sold to Air O. L. Fereus on Alonday morning, until the post offices closed on Thursday night, and the sum includes sales in the country districts, as well as in town areas. This morning Dunedin postal officials expressed surprise at the ready public response to the issue, and anticipated a steady sale for the Anzac stamps during the next five weeks. The £876 4s represents sales for the whole of the district, and of this amount £584 9s lOd was sold ill Dunedin offices._ The chief post office comes first with a total of £474 8s 6d to its credit; Aloray Place second with £74 15s; Alanor Place third with £22 2s 4d ;■ and Dunedin North fourth with .£l3 4s. The stamps will be on sale for another five weeks, and if over £BOO can be collected in four days, the Returned Soldiers’ Association should have a handsome balance at the end of the period as the result of the sales.

The special Returned Soldiers’ Association’s envelopes are still in keen demand, and sales now total 71,700. Although orders arc still being received from country, districts, local business firms form the large majority of the buyers, in conversation with a reporter this morning, Mr Ferens said that a large number of people were buying the envelope for sentimental reasons, and also forwarding them to friends who had lost relatives at Gallipoli. * Arrangements have been concluded for a broadcast talk on the Anzao stamp to be made from 4YA on Tuesday evening. The association will also hold a meeting of the Poppy Day store captains, district conveners, and helpers on Tuesday afternoon to organise a sale of these stamps by approaching business firms and private individuals.
