HOSPITAL RATING.
TO THE EDITOR., . Sir, —In reference to the letter-by; Cr Silverstone in regard to the hospital levy, I have to state that the number of hospital boards in the Dominion quoted by me was 45, not 47, as reported in' the ' Star ' after the conference of local bodies on Wednesday. _ As the amount'levied by local authorities is made on a capital valuation, the comparison made by me was the same. Counties consider that the levy should not be on this basis, and have passed remits to this effect at county conferences for many years now. The figures quoted bv me are for the year ended March 31," 1936, while the figures quoted by Mr Silverstone are for the year ended March 31; 1935. I stated that of the 16 hospital districts in the South Island, I had_ the figures of 13, and the Otago district was the highest levied per capital valuation of such. On a capital value of £2,394,738, the annuity in the 13 districts, whose figures were available, would be:—Otago £3,665, Wallace £1,788, Vincent £2,741, Southland £1,931, Asbburton £1,515, North Canterbury £2,448, Waitaki £2,595, South Canterbury £2,066, Maniototo £2,508, South Otago £3,216, Inangahua £3,309, > Nelson £2,673, Marlborough £2,386.—1 am, etc., E. F. Batcheloe. Lawrence, May 1. " .
