ODDFELLOWSHIP

HALF-YEARLY INSTALLATION During the past month the halfyearly installation of officers has been carried out in the district by the Acting D.D.G.M. (Bro. M. K. Glover) and his staff of officers. The ceremonies commenced with Unity Lodge, where P.G.S. Bro. L. Deans Ritchie officiated as installing master, having associated with him the following : —D.D.G.W. Bro. R. E. Sligo, Grand Sec.; D.D.G.S. Bro. A. 0. Beveridge. P.D.D.G.M.; D.D.G.T. Bro. K. N. Sudden, Deg. M.; D.D.S. Chap. Bro. A. H. Valentine, P.G.M.; D.D.G.I.S. Bro. D. S. Stewart; D.D.G. Mar. Bro. E. Dunn, D.D.; G. Her. Bro. M. K. Glover. The officers were installed as under; — I. Bro. W. Currie: N.G., Bro. J. Harrison; V.G., Bro. L. Sainsbury; secretary, Bro. W. Hainan (re-elected) ; treasurer, Bro. .1. Milne (re-elected); W.. Bro. C. Paine; Con., Bro. T. Moore; chaplain, Bro. E. Robinson; R.S.S., Bro. L. Berryman; L.S.S., Bro. 6. Murray; R.S.N.G., Bro. ,1. MMntyrc; L.8.N.G., Bro. G. Richards; R.S.V.G.. Bro. E. G. South; L.S.V.G., Bro. J. Cooper; LG., Bro. A. Berrett; 0. Bro. A. Holley. live installing master congratulated the officers upon their promotion, and wished them a happy and prosperous term of office. He was very pleased to see several .young officers taking the chairs, and made reference to the fact that several of them were recent promotions from the Kensington junior brauch. He also spoke of the great tmditions of Unity Lodge, and said he trusted they would one and all work in harmony and union for the advancement of their lodge and order. Tn reply to the vote of thanks, he said it was a privilege and a pleasure to instat the officers of Unity Lodge. The N.G. (Bro, Harrison) thanked the members for electing him to the chair, and said that with the willing help and loyal co-otperation of bis officers and members he would do his best during his terms of office. The V.G. also returned thanks. Visitors from the other town lodges acknowledged their vote, and wished the lodge and its members every success. The next lodge Installed was St. Kilda, where Bro. A. Lawson was installed N.G., Bro. W. Sheifelbien secretary, Bro. J. Lorden treasurer. Greetings were conveyed from other lodges and the D.D.G.M., who wished the lodges every success. At Hereweka Lodge Bro. A. H. Valentine, P.G.M., conducted the installations. being accompanied by brothers from the city lodges. The members of Phoenix Encampment, No. 1, and South Otago District Lodge were present and entered officially. Responding to the N.G.’s vote of thanks, Bro. Valentine spoke of his many pleasant associations with Hereweka Lodge, and explained the symbols of some of the degrees, and impressively reminded them that the success of Oddfellowship lay in the strength of union. He urged them all to press forward with a united front in the great work of the order.

The installing master at Pioneer Lodge was the grand secretary, Bro. R. E. Sligo. Bro. N. Edmonseh was installed as N.G., Bro. F. W. M'Artbur secretary (re-elected), Bro. G. Latimer treasurer (re-elected). After the installations Bro. Sligo, on behalf of the lodge, presented BrO. A. Howie, 1.P.G., with a P.G.’s jewel, and in doing so spoke of the excellent service rendered by the brother not only to liis lodge, but to District Lodge and Ruth Rebekah Lodge. In wishing Bro. Howie niany long years of service, Bro. Sligo said he hoped Bro. Howie would continue his keen interest in the order and in Pioneer Lodge. Bro. Howie suitably replied. The installations at Leith Lodge were marked with special interest on account of the fact that the N.G. elect, Bro. L. Braithwaite, was a grandson of a P.G.M. Bro. Janies Braithwaite, who in years past had rendered yeoman service to the order. In congratulating Bro. Braithwaite, Bro. Sligo said that ho hoped the brother would be inspired by the great record set by his grandparent, and that in the fullness of time he, too, migl; : sit in the highest office this jurisdiction could offer. Bros. L. Deans Ritchie and D. M. Miller gave members some interesting details concerning the foundation of the order and its early struggles under the leadership of Wildey and Ridgely, names that would be remembered by Oddfellows for all time. Visiting brothers congratulated the lodge and the new officers and wished the lodge continued success. At Maori Hill Lodge the installing officer Was P.G.M. Bro. D. M. Miller, assisted by members of the District and Degree Lodge. Bro. Childs was installed as N.G., Bro. A. Jamieson as V.G., Bro. H. Chettleburgh as secretary, and Bro. W. Smith as treasurer, the last-named two being re-elected. Bro. Miller, after the ceremony, spoke of the need for united effort in a small lodge, and urged members to support the officers with their presence on al! occasions.

The installations will bo concluded on Saturday night, when the officers of Linden Lodge will be installed by a team of brothers from Invercargill under the D.D.G.M. for Southland Central, Bro. Dale.
