SCOUT NOTES

HEADQUARTERS. Officers’ meeting will be held at iieadquarters on Tuesday, May 5, at 7.30. All officers of both districts are particularly asked to attend. • Swimming competition will be held at the Municipal Baths on Saturday, May 9, at 6 p.m. Entries must ho handed to metropolitan secretary on or before May 8. Metropolitan First-class Board of Examiners will hold examinations at Passmore camp on the following dates: — June 6 (entries close May 30 and must be handed to the metropolitan secretary on or before that date); on September 5 (entries close August 29). ANZAC DAY OBSERVANCE. Although the Scout movement is not a military organisation, officers and Scouts of the various groups paraded at the Cenotaph to honour the memory of those who fell in the Great War. Groups represented were: Ist Dunedin (Roslyn), 2nd Dunedin (Mornington), 7th Dunedin (Anderson’s Bay), 13th Dunedin (N.E. Valley), 17th Dunedin (Knox), and 27th Dunedin (Kensington), 4th (North Dunedin). TROOP REPORTS. Ist Dunedin (Roslyn) Troop.—Owing to the absence of S.M. Glasson, the .troop paraded under the direction of three of the ex-Scouts, and an instructive and enjoyable evening was spent. The first part of the evening was spent in patrol work, after which games of ringball and rats and rabbits were followed by relays for the rest of the parade. oth Dunedin (Ocean Beach) Troop held its weekly meeting, a good number of Scouts being present. After r. rousing game the patrols were instructed by their leaders in ambulance, pioneering, splicing, and signalling. A new game of blowing out the candle, by P.L. Swanson, was played, also new observation games. Scout J. Ravenswood was successful in passing his tenderfoot test. The Court of Honour met after the parade, when several items concerning the welfare of the troop were discussed. * 27th Dunedin (Kensington).—There was a full attendance at the last 'parade of the troop. A welcome visitor early in the evening was Commissioner Wing. While Scouter was at the committee meeting the P.L.s took their patrols, and P.L.s Swanson and Chiles took first aid and pioneering. They then played games of barging and Soccer. Over Easter week-end the troop went for a hike to Passmore and had an enjoyable time, G. Porvell passing his fire-lighting, also R. Cuthbertson, A. Moore, and L. Bennie, R. Ibbotson was granted fire-lighting and cooking at the Gillwell camp. At the end of the parade a court of honour was held, when the leaders brought up some interesting points. WOLF CUBS. Will all Cub masters have their second star entrants at headquarters, Rattray street, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 2.‘ Ist Dunedin (Roslyn) “ Leopard Pack. —Nineteen Wolf Cubs scampered in the jungle on Thursday last. A new chum was welcomed. While the rest of the pack had a balloon game, under Baloo, the red and white sixes were shown by Akela how to construct better lairs. There has been very keen competition for the cup, and after a very careful test it was won by tbe grey six, with the red six half a mark behind. John Tuck will be the pack sixer for the next three months. During the parade Desmond Everest passed and was presented with his tenderpad. and Gregg Anderson gained his first star. Five Wolf Cubs are hoping to get their second eye open at the second star test on Saturday, and worked hard at signalling and compass, under Baloo. Baghera took knots, flags, and first aid, while Akela showed the new chum some jungle wisdom. After the grand howl the pack scampered off. T'en Wolf Cubs, with Akela and Baloo, paraded at the Kaikorai School on Anzac Day. 4th (North Dunedin) Pack.—Fourteen Wolf Cubs yelled a welcome to Akela. After inspection, roll call, and tile opening ceremony, a reef relay was played, red six being the winners. The pack then scampered to its lairs for some work, Akela taking second star, Baioo flags, and 2nd R. Scannel signalling. After a short period of work Baloo set off with George Driver, lan Simpson, Keith White, Dave Amour, Ray Rankin, and Ron White for a message trail, which led up Rattray street, all Wolf Cubs being back in record time. Visitors during the evening were D.C.M. Livingston and Mr M'Mnrray, of the Group Committee. (jt'h Dunedin (Mosgiel Pack has met round the council rock each Wednesday at 6.15 for its hunt for jungle wisdom. Now boys have joined, as well as Baloo and Baghecra, so that the pack lias 20 Wolf Cubs, with full attendances at almost every hunt. Jungle dances are practised, and the whole pack is keen to learn the tests, to hear stories, and arc very interested in play-acting. The second star Cubs are busy learning and making themselves useful for badges such as house orderly, Guide, and first aid.

9th Dunedin (Mohican) Pack ran m the jungle under Baloo. After the grand howl inspection and roll call were taken. A game of “ ponds ” was played, following which the pack went to "their lairs for some work. Some more of Mowgli in the jungle was told, and was followed hy a game, “ fill the gap.” A jungle dance was practised, and the Otago yell learnt and rendered with enthusiasm. This was followed by a rousing grand howl and the promise. Mr BenfeJl, of the Group Committee, paid a visit.
