WINTER MEETING OPENS WILLOW WAVE WINS BIG HANDICAP Cold and showery weather prevailed for the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s Winter Meeting, which opened to-day. After • heavy rain early this morning the track was dead for the early races, but showed improvement as the programme progressed. Only a fair attendance . witnessed the opening events, and there was a noticeable sprinkling of visitors, particularly from Southland, amongst the crowd. Calm Queen' led the field all the way into the straight, where Great Wood, who was never further back than fourth, was lying third and took the lead halfway down the straight from Calm Queen and Gaynor to win comfortably by two lengths. Calm Queen stayed on long enough to beat Patty Todd, who was lying third in the early stages, but dropped back later, by half a length. San Michele, who was with the leaders throughout, finished close up fourth, Parrish Chimes several lengths back fifth. Times; 3min 39 3-ssec, 3min 41 l-ssec, 3min 41 2-ssec. A sharp southerly shower developed just after the horses were despatched. Myrna Loy and Glorietta were the early leaders from Lucky Jack, Rewai, and Tenor. Glorietta and Lucky Jack had charge the second time round, and entering the back Lucky Jack assumed command, and led the field by two lengths into the straight. The Jack Potts colt stayed on impressively to win by two lengths, and after a great tussle to fill the other places Glorietta finished half a length in front of Diversion, who finished fast, followed by Rewai, Nell Grattan, and Myrna Loy. Lough Guy was smartest away, and led the way to Bingen Wrack, Eighteen Carat, and Frank Mac. Passing the stand for the first time Lough Guy still had charge from Bingen Wrack, Frank Mac. Eighteen Carat, and Belle Derby. Lough Guy broke going into the back, and Frank Mac took charge from Eighteen Carat, Bingen Wrack, and Belle Derby. Frank Mac led a bunched field • into the straight, but Happy Knight moved up fast on the outside before the straight was reached, and had charge soon after lining up for home. Happy Knight stayed on to win by a length from Fairhaven, who finished fast. Eighteen Carat heat Valdor by a half-length for third money, and Lough Guy was fifth. Stirling Lady was elected a strong favourite, and starting from the rear of the field was up with the leading bunch with five furlongs to go. _ At the start Ma Waro and Guy Mauritius swerved across the field and interfered with several of the contestants. Embark" set up a good lead over the first furlong from Trireme, Picotee, and Brigadier. Going into the back. Brigadier ran to the front, and with five furlongs to go had charge from Southern Smile. Ma Waro, Trireme, and Stirling Lady. The favourite moved up into third place, with three furlongs to go, and followed Embark and Brigadier into the straight. In the run home Stirling Lady staved oft a, strong challenge from Embark by half a length. Vologda, who finished fast, bent Southern Smile hv a length for third money. The others were well hack. The favourite. Grand Mogul, broke badly at the start, and Sylvia Sydney, Peter Locanda, Bingen Palm, Agile, and Sea Gift were the leaders until four furlongs from home, where Battlefield moved up fast and led into the straight from Bingen Palm, Willow Wave, Sea Gift, and Grand Mogul. In the run home Willow Wave drew out to win comfortably by two lengths from Battlefield, who was half a length ahead of Grand Mogul. Sea, Gift was fourth and Francis Lincoln next.
