INTERISLAND TOLL GALLS

IMPROVEMENT PROMISED INLAND AIR MAIL MAY BE DROPPED [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, April 28. “ The Government recognises that increased facilities are needed to cope with the enormous demand for toll calls between the North and South Islands,” said the Postmaster-General (Hon. E. Jones) this evening. “ The Government will be considering proposals shortly for its improvement, and will endeavour to meet the increased demand as soon as possible.” The Minister said that the reduced charges for toll calls had certainly met with a great response from business people and the general public. In reply to a question, Mr Jones said he feared there was no prospect of a seduction in the telephone rental charges. Deferring to air mails, Mr Jones said that the alteration in the time-table of Union Airways was not under tho Government’s control. There was only a tentative arrangement between the department and Union Airways for three months, and at the end of that period a contract would he considered. Tho amount of mail had fallen far below expectations, and unless there was a marked improvement there was little likelihood of the air mail being continued after the three months.
