Airs G. Sisc was hostess at a picture party on Alonday evening given as a farewell to Madame Winnie Fraser, who leaves next week for an extended tour in the East.

The Port Chalmers Golf Club held an enjoyable trump whist drive in the Currie Street Hall, Port Chalmers, on Thursday last. After supper was served prizes were presented, the winners being:—First: Lady, Aliss At. Alarshall; gentleman. N. Hannan. Consolation: Lady, Airs Blackman; gentleman, A. Hunter.

The first social evening for the year of tho Otago High School Ex-girls’ Club was held in tho Otago AVomen’s Club rooms on Alonday, April 20. Miss E. M. Allan presided, and welcomed all new members, especially Mrs Scott (nee J. Cameron) and Airs Davis (neo S. M'lntyre). The evening was spent in playing trump whist, and proved most enjoyable, the winners being Airs Dodd and Aliss W. Nichol.

A most enjoyable morning tea was held on Saturday at the Savoy lor Airs G. North, who leaves shortly to take up her residence in Christchurch. Airs North was the recipient of some lovely pieces of china, also a shoulder spray of flowers. Those present included Mesdames North, Barton, Smaill, APLennan, Worthington, Mitchell, M'Creary, Love, M‘Crnckon. Gore, Thomson. Palmer, Raines, and Aliss Pam Barton.

Following the premiere of ‘ Rose Lane ’ last evening, Mr and Mrs R. H. Stevenson gave a delightful supper party at their home in Alton Avenue to honour the author. Miss Edith Howes. The guests were received in the lounge, which was artistically decorated with vases of tall blue iris and bowls of nasturtiums by the hostess, who wore a gold lame tunic over a skirt of hunter green. She was assisted by Miss Howes, whose frock of black velvet was embroidered with a design in brilliants. Congratulations were offered on the great success of the play, and supper was served in the dining room, where bowls of late summer roses wore charmingly arranged. Mrs Deuchrass was the winner of an enjoyable competition. ' The central branch of the League of Mothers met in the Y.AI.C.A. on Thursday afternoon, when Mrs 10. Asliu presided. The thought for the afternoon, given by Mrs Merriugton, was ‘ Disarm the Heart, for That is Peace.’ Airs Cf. W. Reid gave a very interesting talk on her trip to Australia, speaking on the wonderful beauty of Sydney Harbour and beaches and of Canberra. During the afternoon Airs Pointin sang two solos, Aliss Wilson being the accompanist. Aliss Barbara Williams, who recently returned from a tour abroad, where much of her time was spent in studying dancing in London, has opened a studio in Wilson Hall. She intends to specialise in Greek dancing, in junior operatic, and in limbering exercises. Classes in mime will also be formed. It will be remembered that Aliss Williams held classes in movement and mime at the Easter Drama School with great success. She has had unusual opportunities of observing the latest methods used abroad, and her own ability as a dancer is well known In connection with New Zealand Authors’ Week, the poetry circle of the Otago Women’s Club held a meeting on Tuesday, when a largo number of members assembled to do honour to New Zealand poets. Aliss J. U. Nelson opened the meeting with a short account of several New Zealand women poets, among them being Anne Glenny Wilson, Alary Colbornc Vecl, B. Baughan, Eileen Duggan, Dora Wilcox, Aland Peacock, and Jessie Alackay. Aliss Nelson read several poems from the pons of these writers, showing the wealth of materia! there is in this young country of which poems of beauty, poems realistic, and poems of groat literary merit have been made. The poetry circle has the honour of having as members three of Dunedin’s wellknown women poets—Aliss ,E. Howes, Aliss O. Otago Women’s Club " At Home,” On Friday afternoon members of the Otago Women’s Club will hold an “ at home ” in honour of three of their members Miss Edith Howes, whose play, ‘ Rose Lane,’ is being produced at the theatre; Mrs S. C. Wilson, who leaves shortly to make her home in Christchurch; and Madame Winnie Fraser, who leaves next week on a tour of tho East. Otago Bridge Club.

The opening meeting of the Otago Bridge Club was held in the new club rooms in Rattray street on Thursday evening.

A very representative gathering o) players assembled, and were loud in their praise of the rooms, which have been very artistically furnished and are centrally situated. The club will be run on the same lines as the well-known Crockford Club in Christchurch, and will be affiliated to it. Mr R. Alathieson was in the chair, and outlined the proposed activities for the coming season, a feature of which is a comprehensive syllabus ol duplicate match play. Watea Croquet Club. The Watea Club held its closing day on Friday last, when the weather proved far from kind lor an outside function.

' The roomy pavilion, however, was very much appreciated, as the afternoon had to bo spent entirely indoors. Bowls of marigolds and other golden flowers combined with white were used 1 for decoration, the table being very charmingly set out for afternoon tea. The president (Airs W. E. Gibson) presided and welcomed members and friends, later on presenting the trophies won during the past season, as follows: —Champion of the club, Airs Norman Anderson; runner-up Airs J. Robertson. Dalgliesh (president of the Otago Croquet Association) and visitors from other clubs. Taieri Women’s Institute. The monthly meeting of the Taieri branch of the Women’s Institute was held on Thursday. There was a large gathering of members to meet the new president (Airs Williamson), who was recently elected to that office. Airs Williamson accorded a welcome to all, especially to two new members. Airs A. Smellie (secretary) gave an account of the proceedings of the half-yearly meeting of the Alid-Otago Federation Council. Arrangements were made for the annual birthday_ party,. Airs Win. Blackio was appointed delegate to the Dominion conference, to be held in Dunedin in. July. A large amount of work for this year’s programme was submitted and approved. The competition was ‘ Thrift Articles.’ first prize being a household stool, won by Airs Currie, the second and third prizes going to Airs A. Alurray, who won the first prize for last year’s competitions. Nurses’ “ At Home.” The Registered Nurses’ Association gave a delightful at home in the Somerset Lounge on Alonday evening. A warm fire and bowls of chrysanthemums produced a cheery effect, which was enhanced when the room became filled J with the large gathering of guests. Aliss Hilditch (president) and Misses Wilkin, Holford, and Lancaster (vicepresidents) received the guests. Aliss Hilditch read an interesting report of the recent nurses’ conference in Christchurch. and Aliss Joyce gave a report of the obstetrics branch. A short programme was also presented, and included songs by Aliss AUAlillan and Aliss Dick, accompanied by Airs Walmslcy, and a recitation by Aliss Walker. Among those present in a company of about 70 were Dean and Airs Cruickshauk, Air Al‘Kinnon and Dr Siedeberg APKiniion, Air and Airs Bundle, and Air and Airs Colin ACcolson.
