TENEMENT FIRE DRAMA

Dramatic attempts to rescue persons trapped in a fire at a tenement in Exeter recently failed to save the life of Mrs Emily Hoare, a 65-year-old widow, who was burned to death in her room. A window frame was sawn away to reach Mrs Knowles, aged 73, who weighs nearly 16st. Firemen wearing masks and carrying lifelines reached her, and she was taken to hospital suffering from burns. Eleven people living in the nine rooms of the house all got out safely. Chief fire brigade officer Richards related: “We found the place too narrow to use an escape or even jumping sheets. I called to a woman who was screaming at a top-floor window to hold on while we got hook ladders up to her. “ To do that we had to climb over tree branches stacked up for firewood in the yard, and then across an iron roof. Mrs Knowles was found huddled up in her room, and we carried her down the blazing staircase,”
