Mr J. M. Samson left for Wellington by to-dav’s express. Mr L." J. Stevens left this morning on his return to Auckland. ; Mr James Hargest, M.P., passed through from Invercargill by to-day s express on his way north. Colonel and Mrs Dales, tourists from South Africa, were passengers by this morning’s express for Invercargill. Colonel Bowerbank,' who has been attending the annual camp of th® Otago University'Medical Company at Sutton, left on his return to Wellington this morning. . , The Hon. R. S. Vincent, Minister of Mines and Forests, New South Wales, and Mr E. H. Swain, Forestry Commissioner, New South Wales, will arrive to-night, and will be in conference at the Grand Hotel to-morrow. Mr A. C. Kitto, manager of the Wellington team, arived last night for the New Zealand track and field championships. He is a member of the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, and for many years was a member of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union.

Mr L. Marter, of Hawera, who is on® of the West Coast (North Island) delegates to the annual athletic conference, arrived last night. Mr .J. Farrell, representing J._ C. Williamson Limited, arrived last night to make arrangements for the production of ‘ White Horse Inn.’ It was announced last night bv the Minister in Charge of Friendly Societies, Hon. F. Jones, that Mr Cecil Gostelow, Government actuary, had been appointed registrar of friendly societies and superintendent of the National Provident Fund in succession to the late Mr R. Witheford.

On Wednesday evening a number of friends met at the residence of Mr J. T. Hdsking, at Cromwell, to bid farewell to Mr James Johnson, who, for the past five years, has occupied a position as head of the drapery department of D. A. Jolly and Sons, and who has acquired a business at'Owaka.. Mr Johnson was presented with a shaving outfit. Mr T. Pitches, of Opir, is joining him at Owaka.—Cromwell correspondent. At the monthly meeting of the executive of the Scottish Society of Dunedin Mr Eric M'Kenzie was unanimously elected president of the society till the end of the financial year. The Canterbury Sheep Owners’ Union has forwarded to the registrar of industrial unions the nomination of Mr A. C. Mitchell, president of the New Zealand Employers’ Federation, as employers’ representative to attend the annual conference of the International Labour Office at Geneva.

Edward Callaghan, an cx-pupil of the Southland Boys’ High School, has been selected as one of five candidates to proceed to Sydney University Vetera inary College with a Government scholarship to study veterinary science. Ho has the distinction of being the youngest of the five successful nominees. The scholarships, for which there Was a, large number of applicants, are tenafala for three years at the university, and afford excellent opportunities to those to whom they are allotted. _ To congratulate the Minister bf Employment (Hon. H. T. Armstrong) on his appointment to the Ministry, more than 500 Labour electors in Christchurch East attended a complimentary social to Mr and Mrs Armstrong at Christchurch last night. Mr Armstrong was presented with a gold watch and Mrs Armstrong with a gold wristlet watch. Before the Harbour Board commenced its meeting last night, Mr J.B. Waters (chairman) said all members would regret the passing of a very dear friend, Mr H. E. Moller. They admired his long service to the board, his outspoken criticism, his integrity of purpose, and his genuine desire to do i»l! m his power to carry out his duties and to do his best for the general welfare. On the chairman’s motion, the following minute was adopted •—“ That the board places on record its profound regret at the passing of its esteemed colleague, the late Hagbarth Ernest Moller. and its high appreciation of tho practical and willing service rendered by him to the board and the public generally throughout bis continuous term of 25 years as tho representative of the Borough of West Harbour on the Otago Harbour Board, particularly during the three years of his chairmanship, and also in the many important public offices which he occupied during Kis long and honourable connection with public affairs, and further that the board desires to express its sympathy with his widow and relatives in their sad and irreparable loss.” A London Press Association cablegram states that the late Lord Forster left £85,000. The appointment of Mr F. C. Lopdell, M.A., as principal, and Mr F. L. Combs, M.A., as vice-principal of the Wellington Teachers’ Training College, which reopens next Monday, was announced to-day. Mr Lopdcll is at present vice-principal of the Auckland Training College, and Mr Comb? is head master of the Miramar South Priinary .School.—Press Association. Mr C. H. Wynyard (New Plymouth)' was elected president of the New Zealand Society of Accountants at a meeting of the council held to-day, and Mt J. A pleasant function took place at Forbury School when Mr H. V. Miller was farewelled by the staff. The headmaster, Mr D. D. Steadman, referred to the excellent record of Mr Millet during his six years at the school, especially in directing instruction in art, very good progress having been made in this work through his enthusiasm. The hope was expressed that in the wider sphere which he was about to enter at the Normal School, hi* efforts might be attended with an even greater measure of success. Messrs Bennett and Grant also spoke, dealing with the fine lead given to the stafl by Mi- Miller. After receiving an engraved leather case as a parting gift Mr Miller replied, and in doing s« referred to the greater prominence non being given to cultural subjects in oui schools.
