MAREO VERDICT
NEW TRIAL SOUGHT APPEAL BY CSNDEMNED MAN’S COUNSEL [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, February 3-7. ’ An application for a new trial for Eric Mareo, who was found guilty and sentenced to death on Wednesday night on a charge of having murdered his wife, Thelma Clarice Mareo, is tc be made by Mareo’s counsel. It was officially stated to-night that a request would be made to Mr Justice Fair, who presided over the trial, for leave to appeal to the Court oi Appeal for a new trial on the grounds that the verdict was against the weight of evidence. The application will probably be heard in Chambers as soon as the necessary formalities have been complied with. It was reported that there was a possibility of evidence for the defence, which was not available at the time of the Supreme Court trial, being obtained from Australia. Arrangements had been made 'for Graham Mareo and Elizabeth Patricia (Betty) Mareo to sail by the’ Ruahine for England from Wellington on March 7. To-day their passages were cancelled. If the application for a new trial were successful their evidence would be required.
