HANOVER BAPTIST CHURCH

FAREWELL TO MR NORMAN BROWN A largo gathering of members ami friends of tire Hanover Street Baptist Church met last night to bid farewell to Mr Norman Brown, who has been treasurer for 10 years and who will leave shortly for Christchurch. Mr F. Ji. Adams, who presided, read the following minute adopted by the church:—“ In accepting with great regret the resignation of Mr Norman Brown of the offices of treasurer of the church and auditor of the books of the Missionary Society and Baptist Union collections, due to his removal to Christchurch, the members of the church desire to record their high appreciation of Mr Brown's character and services. For nearly 25 years Mr Brown has been associated with the church, and for the past 10 years has filled the responsible office of treasurer with conspicuous success and has placed the church tinder a debt of gratitude not only for his efficient service, but also for the devoted Christian spirit in which that service has been rendered. The cordial wishes of all the members of the church will follow Mr and Mrs Brown and their family with the hope that they will find a congenial sphere of Christian work in the city to which they arc removing.” Mr Adams, in addressing the meeting, took the opportunity of expressing his own personal regard for Mr Brown. As one of the church auditors, he had always had a pleasant experience, though an arduous one, in auditing the church books. The speaker was very appreciative of the thorough and painstaking manner in which Mr Brown had done his work. The quarterly and annual statements alone had involved a great amount of work. On behalf of all present, he expressed his best wishes for the future. Mr Gordon Hendry said he had known Mr Brown personally over a number of years. He recalled some earlier experiences, and stated that he had always found Air Brown the very best of friends. Mr J. Jackson Purdie referred to the high esteem in which both Mr and Mrs Brown were held in the church. Apart from his work as treasurer, Mr Brown had always had an ardent and active interest in the church. He then took the opportunity of presenting Mr and Mrs Brown with a suitably-inscribed and mounted barometer. Mr S. C. Gibson, on behalf of the church deaconate, eulogised Mr Brown’s work and the manner in which he had assisted them in financial matters. Mr AV. J. Bardsley expressed bis regret that it was a young man they were going to lose; this was a time when more young men were required, and he considered Air Brown’s resignation as a great loss. Other members spoke briefly on different aspects of Mr Brown’s work and connection with the church. ■ . Replying, Air Brown said that the particular work he had taken up as treasurer was iu his- line, and he had found it a pleasure to be able to serve the church as such. This would be his first break from Dunedin, and he would find it difficult to take up new work in another town. He thanked those present for their gift, for their kind remarks regarding his family, and foj their good wishes. During the evening a programme ot items was presented by Misses R. and AI. Shrimpton (duets), Miss H. Walker (solo), and Miss P. Kelley (recitation). The meeting was brought to a close with supper, when those present bade farewell personally to Air and Airs Brown. " SUCCESSOR- APPOINTED. At a special church business meeting held earlier in the evening, the question of a successor to Air Brown was considered. The position of church treasurer for the next 12 months is to be occupied by Mr Norman 1). Anderson. Air Stanley Kay was appointed assistant treasurer.
