CROMWELL NEWS

(From Our Own Correspond( nt.J,‘ Cromwell, in common with the rest of the country, last week experienced a spell of unseasonable weather, and in the early part of the week a good deal of rain fell. The worst was a most decided drop in the temperature, and, Thursday and Friday were cold daysSince Saturday warmer days are being experienced. Yesterday the temperature a little after noon in the shade was 78deg. More rain would be welcomed by the pastoralists, and a heavy downpour if widespread would probably provide Oft or 4ft further rise in the river which is required before the dredges at Clyde and Alexandra can be launched.

Tenders are being invited by the Public Works Department for renovations at the Cromwell courthouse. The work includes the replastcring throughout of the courtroom and public office, the shifting of a door from the public office to the court to a more convenient position, and the installation of a more efficient heating system. The improvement of the heating arrangements will be welcomed during the winter months, even though the warden sits only once a month. Thursday, March 19. has been fixed ns the day for the official opening of the Otago Central Electric Power Board’s scheme at the Roaring Meg. For weeks past the huge pipes for the pipe line have been passing through Cromwell from the rail, and the laying of the pipe line is proceeding according to schedule. The power bouse is practically completed, and the machinery is receiving the final touches. Indications suggest that when nominations for the Cromwell Jockey Club’s annual race meeting close on Friday next big fields will he the order of the day. It is quite a long time since as many as four light harness horses were in training on the local course, and from information from the various centres in Central Otago it appears that not for many years have so manj. horses been in training.
