His Honour, Mr Justice Kennedy, has returned from Invercargill. Dr D. G. M'Millan, M. P,, and Mr J, W. Munro, M.P., returned on Saturday from Wellington. , Mr J. L. Passmore, a member of the New Zealand Broadcasting Board, returned by the first express from the north on Saturday. Mr L. F. M'Cormack returned on Saturday from a tour of the North Island. Cabled advice has been received that Miss Catherine Landreth has gained the degree of doctor of philosophy. Dr Landreth, who is a graduate of Otago University and also an M.A. of lowa, U.S.A., completed her Ph.D. degree at the University of California. A tribute to the work of Mr George Bowron, who died last year, was embodied in a resolution passed by the Methodist Conference in Christchurch* Special reference was made to Mr Bowron’s work for the South Island Methodist Orphanage. , Sympathy was expressed with Mrs Bowron. Miss Russell-Fergusson, a well-known Scottish soprano, who is at present touring New Zealand under contract to the New Zealand Broadcasting Board, arrived on Saturday night. She is staying at Wain’s Hotel, where she was met by Mr A. MacMillan, president, and members of the Council of Scottish Societies, and welcomed to the city. Mr A. Campbell returned to Port Chalmers by last night’s midnight train, after attending the Government caucus at Wellington. Latest registrations at the Grand Hotel include Mr J. F. Keep, Miss L.
