CALEDONIAN SPORTS

EMINENTLY SUCCESSFUL MEETING

COMPREHENSIVE AND INTERESTING PROGRAMME

A striking indication of the interest invariably displayed by the public in the annual sports festival of the Caledonian Society was the large attendance at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday afternoon. Despite the threatening weather there were Over 2,000 people present, and they followed a comprehensive programme with the liveliest interest. The track, though in surprisingly good order after a week’s soaking rain, obviously affected performances. Nevertheless, the crowd was treated to some excellent finishes, especially in the running events, which, in view of the impending Dominion championships at Carisbrook, gave a fairly reliable indication of Otago’s strength in this division. The meeting was splendidly controlled, and the comprehensive list of events, which embraced athletics, wrestling-, the interhouse competition, Highland piping and dancing, and an impressive display by the Dunedin Highland Pipe Band, were run simultaneously, thus adding to the attractiveness of the gathering. An outstanding feature of the running was the performance of B. L. Tapley in the 100yds. Tapley was at the peak of his form, and notwithstanding the dead nature of the track and a stiff head wind, he won his heat in 10 3-ssec and the final in 10 2-ssec—-the latter race furnishing a thrilling finish, in which Tapley displayed the judgment of a champion. Theo Allen, another Otago representative, conceded the winner of the 880yds handicap 35yds and finished third in fine time. In the middle-distance races J. M'Lachlan, J. S. Asher, and G. R. Colston fully deserved their successes. The performances in the field events were well below standard, the competitors finding the slow going a decided disadvantage. A fillip to the secondary school races was given by the athletic debut of King’s High School. Primary school events were also held during the afternoon. . A competition that aroused great interest was held among the interbusiness houses for the challenge cup donated bv the Caledonian Society s president (Mr John Hope). This trophy was won by the Bruce Woollen Company’s team by a substantial margin from the D.I.C. and the H.B. teams, which tied for second place. The competition aroused the keenest rivalry and interest, the march-past, judged by Messrs J. P. Northey and J. S. Douglas to music by the Forbury School Band, being extremely spectacular. This phase of the meeting was the subject of glowing praise by the adjudicators, who were obviously impressed by the bearing of the teams,. Inseparable from the Caledonian sports are the skirl of the pipes, wrestling, and national dancing. The Dunedin Highland Pipe Band, which is the present champion combination in the Dominion, gave an exhibition in the drum-major’s display that it will repeat at the national championships next month. The band was directed by Drum-major Maher and Pipe-major Walker. The Forbury School Band provided incidental music during the meeting. Exciting wrestling bouts were held, the referees being Messrs C. L. Piner atid J. J. Hall, while the national dancing events were judged by MisS Rita Miller (Oamaru), the official piper being Mr A. M'Millan. The undoubted success of the meeting was due in no small measure to the manner in which it was controlled, an energetic committee of officials, under the directorship of Mr Hope, despatching the lengthy pro-

gramme, including amateur and professional cycling races, with commendable promptitude. The results were as follows: —
