SYNTHETIC WOOL

DEFICIENCIES OF ITALIAN PRODUCT OPINION OF BRITISH EXPERTS Press Association— By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, February 22. The Associated Press Association’s special Bradford correspondent says that the Wool Industries Research Association’s report on Italian “ milkwool ” states that its appearance is similar to merino tops, except that there is no crimp. The difference is that the new fibre does not possess scales like wool, turns yellow and weakens in alkali, and swells lengthwise 7i per cent, compared with 1} per cent, in wool when wet. It also lacks elasticity and shows greater affinity for acid dyes than wool. Moreover, it does not possess characteristics enabling it to compete with natural wool except in abnormal conditions. It may be mixed with cotton rayon and produce cheap cloth for Italy in the present economic circumstances, it is an interesting technical achievement, but does not bring nearer a molecular structure with all the properties of wool.
