SCOTTISH SOCIETY

The monthly social and dance of the Scottish Society was held in the V ictoria Hall on Saturday evening, a large gathering of members and friends being present. Mr John M’Donald, patron of the society, and members of the executive were piped to the platform by Piper N. M'PHcrson. In his opening remarks, Mr M'Donald made reference to the death of the society’s late president, Mr George Munro, and asked the gathering to stand as a mark of respect while Piper M’Pherson played a lament, ‘ The Flowers of the Forest.’ Mr M'Donald said he had been personally acquainted with Mr- Munro since he arrived in New Zealand, being closely associated with him in connection witli piping and dancing. He learnt to appreciate his services as a liigh-class piper and a man with a great knowledge of Scottish national music and da'nciug. The esteem in which he was held by the officers and men of that famous Regiment, _ the Black Watch, in which he was a piper, was proof of the high character of their late president. During his term of service in the police force in Dunedin, he had carried out his duties with a great knowledge of human nature, always tempering justice witli kindness. He was one of the foundation members of the society, and had been president since its formation. His passing created a want in the society which would be hard to fill. Items were given by Miss Buruard, Mr Stewart, Miss M'Gregor, Mr W. M. Sutherland, sword dance by Miss I;. M’Pherson, sailor’s hornpipe by Miss B. Brown. The dance music was supplied by Miss Matheson and Mr M. Buchane. Mr J. Ramsay was M.C.
