ROTARY VALVE ENGINES
It is possible that, because of the exhaustive experiments now being conducted by car manufacturers in Great Britain and Continental countries, the rotary valve internal combustion engine might within a few years find a jdace in stock model cars, states the Sydney ‘ Morning Herald.’ According to current reports, some 15 factories in various countries are carrying out research in that direction because, presumably, they think that the zenith of scieptific efficiency with the poppet valve engine has been almost attained, and success over competitors might be secured by a revolutionary change in engine design to a unit which differs fundamentally from Hie present types. Progress in these researches has been slow and it is too early to acclaim the rotary valve engine as the imminent challenger of the poppet valve unit, but it is expected that the former will at least attract great attention in the near future. Various patents have excited the interest of producers seeking an engine in which the conventional valve mechanism is supplanted by a novel and more efficient system of introducing the explosive mixture and expelling the exhaust gases.
It is said that the Cross rotary valve engine, the product of an English inventor, is held in good esteem by many manufacturers, and that the M'Laren rotary valve unit, an Australian patent; Has been received very favourably, as a result of highly satisfactory tests conducted in Australia and in England.
