MOVEMENTS ON THE COAST,

Rata arrived this morning, and sailed this afternoon for Wellington, Nelson, Westport, and Greymouth. Storm arrived this morning, and is expected to sail to-morrow for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, Picton, and Wanganui. Holmdale is duo to arrive to-morrow, and is to sail the same day for Oamaru, Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, Picton, and Wanganui. Wingatui is to leave Lyttelton this evening for Dunedin, and is due here to-morrow evening. She sails- on Saturday for Oamaru, Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, and Auckland. Holmglcn is due to sail on February 17 for Wellington, New Plymouth, Waikato via Timaru and Lyttelton. Karetu left Sydney on Monday evening for Hobart, Sydney, and is due here on February 18. Her cargo includes transhipments from the Moldavia, Allor, Gogra, Nieuw Holland, and Yaye Maru. Port Whangarei is expected to sail on February 19 for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, Auckland, Tauranga, and Wanganui. TRANSPACIFIC MAIL SERVICES. —Northbound.— Niagara left Sydney on January 30 and Auckland on February 4 for Vancouver via Suva and Honolulu. She is due at Vancouver on February 21. - Monterey left Sydney on February 5, and Auckland on February 8 for Los Angeles and San Francisco via Suva, Pago Pago, and Honolulu. She is due at Los Angeles on February 22 and San Francisco on February 24. Maunganui left Sydney to-day, and will leave Wellington on February 18 for San Francisco via Rarotonga and Papeete. She is due at Saa Francisco on March 6. Aorangi is to leave Sydney on February 27 and Auckland on March 3 for Vancouver via Suva and Honolulu. She is due at Vancouver on March 20. Mariposa is to leave Sydney on March 4 and Auckland on March 7 for Loa Angeles and San Francisco via Suva, Pago Pago, and Honolulu. She is duo at Los Angeles on March 21 and San Francisco on March 23. Makura is to leave Sydney on March 12 and Wellington on March 17 for San Francisco via Rarotonga and Papeete. She is due at San Francisco on April 3. —Southbound.— Aorangi left Vancouver on January 29 for Auckland and Sydney via Honolulu and Suva. Maunganui is to leave San Francisco on March 11 for Wellington and Sydney via Papeete and Rarotonga. She is due at Wellington on March 30 and Sydney on April 4. NON-SUBSIDISED SHIPPING. While criticising the Government subsidising of shipping lines, Mr Nils R. H. Werring, a partner in the Norwegian Shipping Company of W 7 ilhelm Wilhelmsen, explained in Melbourne that none of the Norwegian shipping companies received either direct or indirect subsidies. Mr Werring, who arrived in Melbourne by the motor ship Tudor, accompanied by bis wife, a granddaughter of the founder of the company, said that the recent statements by Mr Alexander Shaw, chairman of the P. and O. Company, might have given the impression that all non-British lines were subsidised, but that was incorrect. “ Subsidies have a very demoralising effect on shipping,” said Mr Werring, “ and tend to keep uneconomical tonnage in commission.” RUAHINE DEPARTS. Having discharged the local portion of her general cargo from* London, tho liner Ruahine left Port Chalmers last evening for Timaru, Lyttelton, and New Plymouth to complete discharge. MATAROA DUE SOON. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company advises that the Mataroa is due at Port Chalmers on Tuesday from Bluff to load frozen meat and general cargo for London. She will sail on February 20 for Lyttelton and Wellington to complete loading. NARBADA TO SAIL. The Union Company’s chartered steamer Narbada, which is undergoing survey and overhaul at Port Chalmers, will sail about February ?7 for Newcastle, Rangoon, and Calcutta. She will load at Calcutta and other Eastern, ports for New Zealand. THE CANADIAN BRITISHER. Messrs H. L. Tapley and Co. advise that the Canadian Britisher left Melbourne last Saturday for Lyttelton, Bluff, and Dunedin to load wool and other products. She is due here on February 18, and will sail on February 19 for Timaru to complete loading for New York, Boston, and Halifax. THE PORT WAIKATO. The Port Waikato sailed from Auckland last Friday for Clarence River to load for New Zealand. DALEMORE FROM ANTWERP. The New Zealand Shipping Company has received advice that the steamer Dalemore left Antwerp on February 1 with a cargo of basic slag for Auckland, Wellington, and New Plymouth.
