Winds of gale force have swept the country to-day, gusts of 70 miles an hour being reported. Extreme cold prevails and the weather forecasts predict its continuance for several days. There were heavy sea* in the English Channel and two seamen lost their lives when a barge in which they were being towed broke loose near Plymouth and sank.
