HANGING PICTURES
CONSIDER THESE POINTS How many of us give to the framing and hanging of our pictures the thought and care these matters deserve? Too often we feel that we have done all that is necessary when we have chosen a more or less inoffensive moulding (jnd have found a blank space on the wall on which to hang another picture. It is perhaps easier to define the don’ts rather than the do’s. Let us consider some of the don’ts. First as to background. Generally speaking, a patterned wallpaper is to be avoided like the plague, though sometimes the walls of a very large room with large pictures of a particular character in ornate frames can he covered in thin way. Next, don’t overcrowd your walls. Too many pictures ih a room will destroy any artistic arrangement, and the result will be anything but restful. Lastly, if the hook cannot be hidden behind the’ picture, do not commit the unpardonable sill of forming an unsightly inverted V from frame to picture rail: It is a simple matter to use two hooks from which vertical, parallel cords extend to the frame without creating an ugly shape. • Judiciously chosen and hung pictures can be very useful at times in correcting proportional defects in a room. For instance, if one is faced with a wall space which is too square, a vertical picture hung above a piece of furniture will lead the eye up, and in so doing will give greater height. On the other hand, if the room is too high for its size a better proportion will he obtained by placing the picture rail fairly low and keeping the pictures low. 'Phis will have the effect of holding the attention on the lower part of the room and the observer is not so conscious of the height of the ceiling.
