Mr and Mrs Basil Wilson, of Ceylon, have left on a trip to the Franz Josef Glacier. Mrs Charles White, Wellington, is the guest of her sisters the Misses Ramsay, London street. Misses R. Wither and W. Milne, of Dunedin, are at present visiting Christchurch. Miss I. Rattray, accompanied by Mrs C. J. Brodrick, of Invercargill, is on a visit to the' Southern Lakes. Mr and Mrs T. H. Lowry, of Hawke’s Bay, are visiting Dunedin for the Cup Meeting. Mr ami Mrs Derek Gould, of Christchurch, are staying at the Grand Hotel for the Cup Meeting. Mrs G. Baldwin, Marton, and Miss Batchelor, London, are the guests of Mrs F. S. Batchelor, Belmont Lane. Lady Pinney left on Saturday on a visit to Australia, and intends to return to Dunedin early in March. Mrs A. Meikle, Nelson, is the guest of her mother, Mrs J. Cunningham, Lees street. Miss Ella Orbcll, Merivale Lane, Christchurch, is the guest of Bliss Joachim. Beaumont road. Mrs F. Logan. Middlemarch, is the guest of Mrs A. R. Falconer, The Bungalow. Mrs J. A. Roberts left Dunedin today, bound for England. Mrs R. S. Park, Wellington, is at present the guest of Mrs S. M. Park, Roslyn. Mr and Mrs J. Williams left today for Wellington to meet them son, who is returning by the Rangitiki from British Guiana. Major Meller and his wife, Baroness Barton, of England, will attend the Cup Meeting at Dunedin. They will be guests at the Grand Hotel. Tim Rev. A. C. W. Standage, Mrs Standage, and Mr I. W. Standage have returned to Dunedin after a holiday spent in Timaru and Christchurch. Mrs A. G. Meiklejohn will leave tomorrow for Wellington, where she will join Mrs W. J. Robinson, of Wanganui, an route for Great Britain and India. Mrs Charles White (Dominion president of the League of Mothers) was entertained at morning tea yesterday at the Otago AVomen’s Club by the presidents of the local branches and the executive of the League of Mothers in Dunedin. Those present were Mrs John Reid (president). Mesdames E. Aslin, C. North, S. M. Park, G. F. Booth, G AV. Thomson, J. J. Cairney, L. Cleghorn, Cree Brown, G. AV. Reid, Magnus Johnson, Dodd, Abernethy, Seddon, and T. M'Gregor, Mrs Edmonds, of Christchurch, invited several young people to a delightful tenuis and morning tea party on AA’ednesday in honour of Dr Taylor, who is a visitor to Dunedin. Bliss Kathleen Falconer was hostess at a most enjoyable tennis party given yesterday afternoon at her home as a farewell to Miss Marjory Mumford, prior to her departure for England. The other players were Mrs I. Logan, Blisses Lorraine Dawson, Stella Fitchett. Joyce Throp, Bloira Burnside, Audrey Bleek. Jean Paterson. Elizabeth Ritchie, Blolly Scott, and Colina Falconer.

Lady Ferguson was hostess at a luncheon party to-day at the Otago Women’s Club, given in honour of Mrs G. Baldwin, of Marion, and Miss Batchelor, of London, who are visitiig Dunedin. The luncheon room was very prettily decorated with carnations, bowls of the same lovely flowers being used on the tables Other guests were Mrs F. S. Batchelor, Mrs Gerald Ferguson, Mrs G. R. Ritchie, Mrs C. R. Rigg (Melbourne), Mrs Cheeseman, and the Misses Webster and Dora Williams. ,

The annual meeting of the Navy League, which was held on Monday afternoon in the Somerset Lounge, was followed by an “ at home ” given in honour of Vice-Admiral J. E. T. Harper, C. 8., M.V.0., R.N. (retired), who was the speaker at the meeting. The room was appropriately decorated with red, white, and blue flowers, while the Union Jack and the New Zealand flag figured in the scheme with the badge of the Navy League. Mr and Mrs Sutherland Ross received the guests, who, after tea, were given an opportunity of meeting Vice-Admiral J. E. T. Harper and discussing matters with him. There were present—Sir Percy and Lady Sargood, Lady Allen, Commander and Mrs E. F. Watson, Mr and Mrs R. S. Black, Mr and Mrs E. C. Reynolds, Mr-and Mrs D, Phillips, Mr and Mrs James Begg. Mr and Mrs W. F. Edmond, Mr and Mrs S. G. Pethor, Mesdames M'Kellar. Thomas Brown. Speight, and Bell, Dr Siedeberg M'Kinnon, Misses Cutten. Cargill, Geerin, Barron, and Allen, and Messrs Knight, Morrell, and Salinger. An anology was received for the unavoidable absence of the Hon, F. Jones, Minister of Defence.

Miss N. E. Oekcnden, of Auckland, who is a gifted lecturer on various subjects, gave an address at the Tbeosophical Hall last Sunday, the 400th anniversary of the death of Sir Thomas More, She chose for her subject ‘Utopias: Then and Now.’ and traced the advancement of the race through world-wide movements, tending towards the unselfish outlook on life so well outlined in Sir Thomas More’s ‘ Utopia.’

The monthly meeting of the Macandrew Bay Women’s Institute was held on Thursday last at 7.45 p.m., Mrs Gibson presiding. The roll call was * Ideas for Competitions.’ The competition for a banner design was won by Mrs Stapleton. A very enjoyable and delightful talk was given by Lady Pinney, of Dorset, who spoke chiefly on institute work abroad, leaving some very excellent ideas for next year’s work. Mrs Kirkland (Mosgiel) also spoke to the members. The hostesses were Mesdames Hook. Kelly, Whitburn, Hellyer, Landreth, Dow, Ledgerwood, and Nelson, and the committee hostess Mrs Stapleton.

The Tomahawk branch of - the Women's Institute met on Thursday last. There was a good gathering of members, due, no doubt, to the fact that Lady Pinney, of Dorset, England, was to be present, accompanied by the president of the Mid-Otago federation. Mi’s Kirkland. The meeting opened with, those present standing in silence for two minutes as a mark of respect to the late King. Lady Pinney spoke on the work of institutes in general, her address being most interesting and humorous, and Tomahawk Institute was indeed lucky in having the privilege of a visit from so distinguished a vistor. Mrs Kirkland, the organiser of the local institute, addressed the assembly; also hearty votes of thanks were passed to both ladies, The.after-

noon’s competition, 1 Best Plate of Cocoanut Ice,’ was won by Mrs Hill, Mesdames Mathieson and W. Harbrow being placed second and third respectively. Mrs Hill gave a demonstration on knitting, her varied display of woollen goods being much admired. There was also on view a most interesting collection of articles, the work of overseas institutes, which Lady Pinney had in her keeping. The day’s hostesses were Mesdames Biggs, Dickson, W. Marlow, J. Harbrow, and Henderson. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. The date of the annual meeting was fixed for Wednesday, March 11, at 1.45 p.m.

Mrs J. R. Reed, of Wellington, is the guest of Mrs R. Kennedy, Whitclee. Mr Justice Reed will arrive to-morrow, and will be the guest of Mr Justice Kennedy and Mrs Kennedy until Saturday.
