BURNSIDE STOCK SALES

SHEEP VALUES RISE SHARPLY Lambs yarded at to-day’s weekly sale at Burnside were much below the standard forwarded for disposal at recent sales, the continuous dry weather affecting their condition. Though there were very few prime heavy bullocks forward the quality generally was fairly satisfactory. A disappointing feature of the sale was the very poor lot of fat sheep penned. , In the fat lamb section the numbers, were approximately 1,100, with only a small percentage of prime heavy sorts, the majority being.medium and light. Butchers were evidently impressed with the prime heavy-weights, and exporters kept the market firm for all grades. The sale could be classed as good, with prices at par to a shade firmer on last Wednesday's prices. The fat sheep penned were the poorest forward for many sales, while there were only a few wethers that could be classed as good. Only a small number of prime ewes were offered, the majority being medium class. The sale was keen from the outset, with values in ewes appreciating from 3s to 4s and wethers from 2s to 2s 6d.

There were 205 fat cattle yarded. Prime heavy bullocks were not of large numerical strength, but this deficiency was compensated for by their condition. A fair percentage of the bullocks were of prime medium weights and of very impressive class. • The lightweights lacked finish. The entry of cows was much smaller than at last week’s sale,' with the quality below standard. The majority of the _ cows were of medium grade with a tail-end of light and weedy sorts. The sale opened quietly with prices about on a par with late rates, but improving fully 10s on the second race. Until the last race was offered this price was maintained, when there was a further rise of 10s. The increase was only operative on prime bullocks. Cows and heifers did not show any improvement. The top price (£l2 7s. 6d) was for a very nice draft from Southland. Other good consignments from the same province fetched from £lO 10s to £ll 10s.

There was a very small entry of store cattle, with no quotable lines of steers. The yarding was wholly comprised of odds and ends. One pen of steers brought £3 13s, and a pen of heifers from £1 10s to £3 10s. A small yarding of boner cows of inferior quality were sold at late rates. The pigs numbered 206 fat and 100 store. Porkers sold from £1 10s to £2 10s, at approximately 6sd per lb, and baconers from £2 12s to £3 15s, at approximately 6d per _lb. A fairly large yarding of vealers—approximately 60—were forward. Their quality was only medium. Bests were in good demand at last week’s rates, others being 5s per head easier. Bests sold at £2 ss, and others from £1 to £1 10s.
