' When financial statements presented by the mayor and town clerk came up ior consideration at a meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council Cr Keys said that it was quite in order for the mayor to associate himself with the town clerk, but it was “ not the thing ” for the mayor and town clerk to present different financial statements. Cr Greig submitted that, as the town clerk was treasurer, the financial statement should come from him. “ I do not want to belittle His Worship, but 1 could not make head or tail of the figures submitted by him,” said Cr Sutherland. The mayor (Mr A. .1. M‘Curdy) said that the bank manager had suggested that a monthly check should be kept on the expenditure. He personally had to sign the vouchers, and lie presented these items so that councillors could “ feel the pulse ” of the expenditure. He had left the statement of income to the town clerk. “ To test the feeling of the meeting, I move that the mayor’s statement be put in the waste-paper basket,” said Cr Purvis, “ 1 second that,” said Cr Baskett. “ You will get publicity whether you want it or not,” said the mayor.
