SPEED BOAT RACING

SEGRAVE MEMORIAL CUP OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY Speed boat racing in Otago Harbour lias at iast received an impetus that is likely to make regattas more interesting to the general public. Last night the Port Chalmers Regatta Committee was presented by Mr R. J. Paul with a handsome silver cup for fast racing. The cup is to be known as the Sir Henry Segrave Memorial. As is well known the late Sir Henry Segrave was twice winner in international motor boat racing, and was also holder of the world’s automobile speed record. In Miss England 11. Sir Henry the world’s record on water at 98.76 .miles per imur. It was after establishing that record tbit on a run on Lake Windermere (England) he met his, death through Miss : England 11. striking a submerged object. Sir Henry left college to enter the World War, and immediately went into the trenches. Later he became an aviator, and was shot down over the lines. He was wounded several times before he was 21 years old. As a youth of 17 he entered the shell-torn front in ; Flanders with the Warwickshire Regiment, from which he was transferred to the Royal Flying .Corps in 1915, his bravery having won him mention. He was appointed private secretary to the Chief of the Air Staff. At the close of the war he entered the automobile industry as an engineer and soon began motor racing, which culminated in world records. “By his death,” the magazine ‘ Motor Boating ’ states, “the world lost a true, sportsman, a cool,', brave English gentleman, one of those daring men, who in each generation adds something fine and enduring ■to the glory of sportsmanship.” The Regatta Committee warmly thanked Mr Paul for presenting the Segrave Cup for motor racing in Otago Harbour. v ' ■

The cup itself is a handsome trophy, and will serve as an incentive to bring speed boat racing in Otago Harbour up to what is naturally looked for in such'a fine harbour. Mr Paul lias always been personally interested in speed boat racing, and has himself held the Otago championship.
