REVENUE FOR STATE

BOOKMAKERS FINER [Pie United Press Association.} AUCKLAND, January 10. Nine men appeared in the Police Court this morning charged with bookmaking or keeping a common gaming house. Their appearance was the result of Auckland detectives’ last round-up of bookmakers for 1935. The fines were imposed by Mr M'Kean, S.M., and were: —Lionel Arthur Baker, £10; Albert Clarence Tait, £10; Frederick Walter Breed (his third conviction), £SO; Edward Martin Harvey Nicholson, £2O. William Joseph Bird and Allan Bremner, who admitted partnership in a common gaming house were fined £2O each. Appearing for one defendant, Mr F. W. Schramm. M.P., said the gaming legislation of New Zealand might undergo some alteration in the near future.

The magistrate commented that previous fines inflicted by him were apparently no deterrent. Hearing of charges of bookmaking against William George Bloomfield, William Flynn, and Thomas Archibald Hayes was adjourned.
