DUNCAN GREY ATONES
OLYMPIC CYCLIST IH FORM “ Dune ” Gray, the Olympic and Empire 1,000 metres time trial champion, atoned for his defeats in the mile and five-mile amateur cycling track championships recently by the 1,000 metres championship at Sydney on Saturday night. Gray beat Reid in the semi-final, while Thomas defeated Horrie Pethybridge. Gray won in two straight heats in the final. He had no excuse for his overthrow by Petbybridge in the mile and five miles title events. Iu the. former he rode up to the pacer, but was simply pedalled off his feet. . In the longer race he rode at the tail of the field, apparently assuming the terrific pace would cause most to crack u;), but, when the final sprint occurred, he had too many to go round (says an Australian writer). At the moment Gray is_ riding well up to Olympic form, while his rival, Pethybridge, who competed at the Empire Games last year, is also making a strong bid for Olympic consideration. There should be some great racing at the Australian championships at Adolaide this month, with the Victorians, Reg. Goodwin, Tas. Johnson, and Chris. Wheeler, also seeking the honours.
Gray appeared in Dunedin some years ago with Jack Standee, who subsequently became a professional.
